brouer: But, like with movies and TV series, there are lots of games I enjoy playing to completion once, and never return to. For those I kinda think the rental model feels more "honest" than a DRM'ed purchase, where I can't even be sure I'll be able to run the thing 5+ years from now. Even if the game itself ought to run fine, will the DRM be compatible?
I don't deny a rental model is appealing if for no other reason than to demo games. What I fear though is that it is getting people used to the Netflix model for gaming. Once people are conditioned they can pull the switch and stop letting you ever own the games. This is what large companies like MS are aiming at. They want gaming as a service you pay a monthly fee for. They just need the tech to get a bit better and people to get conditioned to it. That's where it is going.

I remember the upset when Half Life 2 could not be installed without installing Steam. Now hardly anyone would bat an eye at that. I believe what's happening with GamePass is the same process and MS will eventually lock all their IP behind a subscription service.

Crazy_McGee: I might have disagreed with you, what with the extremely large install base...then I saw Windows 11 in action.
What a disaster.

EverNightX: Sears, Roebuck and Co was dominant once, so was IBM, so was Blockbuster, so was Blackberry, so was AOL. A large install base might slow the decline. But it can't stop it.
Couldn't agree more. I was simply referring to the 'long future' part; Sears started to show signs of trouble as early as the late 80s but managed to keep going for another 20 years. I genuinely hope that Microsoft is still around in 20 years; besides the countless people who would lose their jobs (most of whom have no say in the direction of the company) I am one of those romantic fools who thinks that they can, with the right leadership, turn things around and produce another Windows XP.

Or, maybe not.

While I think Microsoft will be around, they have been taking steps to withdraw from the consumer end of thing and embrace the services end of things, even doing things like sharing the source to old windows programs and system components.
So I have tried with having its own partition for /home and not and even if both methods have their pros and cons, I have come to the conclusion that no separate partition is the way for me but you should choose what you like.

Ranayna: Question: How would i check if Heroic did actually submit timetracking info to GoG?
avatar
ciemnogrodzianin: No idea. For me the best method is just not logging into GOG :D
I'm proud of my "0 hours played" on GOG and I don't want to lost this achievement ;)
Where do you see this number though? Or is that just an assumption on your part?

Just select "Your profile" from top menu. In my case it's: https://www.gog.com/u/ciemnogrodzianin

Ah, now you made me remember and look it up… I disabled the profile, even for myself.
Enabling seems to take some time though, and i suspect that nothing will be logged with the profile turned off.

dtgreene: What software will you install on it? This includes, but is not limited to:
* Linux distribution
* Desktop environment
* Game launcher (like Lutris, Heroic Game Launcher) if you choose to use one

Also, it would help if you would explain why you would make your specific choices.
Debian 11. For stability reasons and preferring LTS releases.
XFCE. Lower on resources, customizable.
No game launcher, no use it in it for me.
WINE, Firejail, gaming emulators plus firmware/drivers: Too many games are Windows-only, installing Firejail with custom configs, isolation, is important to surely keep the host safe of whatever is going on inside the WINE environment; The emulators is for Nintendo Switch and other staff like that, should be pretty secure; The firmware/drivers from the non-free section are not installed by default, always need to fix.
Nothing else is on, it's a gaming computer, not for browsing the Internet nor for any other tasks.

I can now confirm that the profile did not log while it was turned off. The forumposts it lists are old.
I can only confirm if it logs Heroic or Lutris logins on saturday.
