Elenarie: Get MPC-HC instead. VLC may play everything, but it is pretty bad at picture quality.

apehater: there are differences in pic quality because of program?
Yep, lots of variables can have an affect, codes and filters, colour profiles, brightness and contrast, rendering profiles...

It is basically, how good an app renders what it is really supposed to render.

thats why i asked, (as far as i know) the player program is just a user interface that uses the same codec and the same cpu&gfx drivers/cpu&gfx for rendering. so basically same pic with different ui. is this wrong?
I should add "Potplayer" to the list, it's minimalist and plays everything (self contained), and if it can't play it it'll self update to play it.

By the way, MP4 is just a container, as a container it's function is to contain a codec, maybe you can play some MP4 files but not others because of a lack of certain codecs, if WMP won't update itself, or give you a hint of what codec to search for, then you'll have to hunt for codecs and install them yourself.
Better get a play everything player, like the aforementioned in the thread.

VLC Portable is the best (IMO)

Yes.
Ages ago I abandoned WMP for VLC and I've never had a problem with a video since then!

Anyway, to identify the possible required codecs, check the files with Media Info.

Ages ago, I abandoned Winamp for Foobar2000, but that's because exotic formats.

Well for example, in MPC-HC, under Options > Playback > Output, there are several various rendering choices ("Video Mixing Renderer 9") and whether they support hardware ("DXVA") and subtitles and so on. I doubt most people could notice a visual difference between them though.

My vote is for MPC-HC too. Mostly I like the icons it uses for different file types and the minimal interface. (VLC gets the job done too).

As mentioned above, Media Info to check file codecs.

If the OP is intent on using WMP, the Shark007 codec pack is probably the best way to get everything to play.

For music, Foobar2000, for the win! (FTW!) Endless ways to customize the layout to your liking. (Although not the most user-friendly to learn how, but once you set it up, so much fun to use. I've probably spent hours adding plug-ins and tweaking the layout and it just gets better every time. I'm kind of obsessed with it)

I'm still using Winamp instead lol!
Foobar2000 is nice, but isn't perfect for me.
