I might not want a box but I'd dig something like a cloth map, an interesting printed manual (like the old SimCity games had), a souvenir deck of trading cards, etc. Notice that all of these things are flat and would fit in a box or on a shelf with other items rather than being a tacky bust or those dead-eyed plastic dolls taking up two vertical feet of space.

You're creating a false equivalency -- cd checks and copyright protection pre internet is not the same as modern drm, modern drm is literally holding part of the games code and files on some server across the internet. Before the 2000's and high speed internet penetration was everywhere that was impossible because companies knew they were worried about sales.
Pre internet you got the complete software companies couldn't hold part of the software back needing a server to require permission to you to use it. Note that Doom, Descent and warcraft 2 had multiplayer, note that the multiplayer code is self containd and you can still play multiplayer without needing permission from some server software from the other side of the internet.
Quake 3 vs Doom 2016 is an excellent example, quake 3 's multiplayer is totally self contained no one can break the original quake games multiplayer code. Modern DRM games are different - they aren't giving you the complete game, they are holding back the multiplayer code on servers in their offices or amazon AWS servers.
That's a radical change from the 90's. So no modern DRM is not like copyright protection of the 90's what so ever. Since modern drm is literally software companies control and requires you to be spied on whenever you use it. AKA you need permission from their computers to use the shit you're paying for. That's the disgusting thing about "online games" and this false corporate propaganda that has so infested gaming.
That's why no one can talk about games on the internet, the average person is just too stupid to see how they've been defrauded.

the only difference between Diablo 3 and diablo 2 is that blizzard now controls and streams level data for diablo 3, they totally control whether that game works or not. They've literally stolen the game and trapped part of the game files ona computer in their office. So when you "buy" diablo 3 you're not buying the game your paying to access a game that is totally run and controlled from a computer in their office.
So no that's why intelligent discussion "cannot be had" because everyone has already eaten the corporate propaganda and bought into software companies control.
There are only two states: Either we control the games we are paying for or companies do. I know its hard for your brain to fathom but there it is. That's how simple the discussion is, trying to say that I'm "not adult" and insulting your intelligence because you disagree with what I've said proves that you are the exact reason gog.com exists - the person who bought drm laden games enabling the mass theft of videogame software.
Lan, no level editors and everything else has been massively pared back in AAA games and now literally games can be "shut down" how fucking moronic is that for a piece of software to be "shut down"? So yeah anyone who thinks games you are paying good money for should be thrown away at the whim of publishers is an enemy to any true gamer.

Which is not relevant, the choice is simple they want our money then we should get the entire game we are paying for. Anyone who believes differently is already too stupid to participate.

Way too much middle ground fallacy in this topic. It is not wrong to be 100% against a bad thing, and it isn't enlightened to make excuses for why DRM and the proliferation of online-only is some wonderful horizon-broadening tool, or something that we niche gamers just have to accept. We accept that it exists but we refuse to support it and we speak out against it. For some reason that makes people uncomfortable. But consider that those of us who embrace our "niche" can articulate objective reasons why our niche is superior to the mainstream model that the masses love so much. The opposite has not been shown to be true.
