Impc7r: I still prefer the old way of doing things but I can probably try scummv for this particular game
Here is another MINUS
I cannot transfer my SAVE called MALC_001.SAV (the save file with dos) with scumv? NO I cannot, have to start over
Why would you need to start over? I'm confused.
Impc7r: The adventure game makes a SAV file which appears as a file in your game folder. The scummv even on Windows, when I save a game SAVED FROM SCUMV, I can see you can load it from the Scummv window but there is no file anywhere of the game saved with DOS. And if I copied the SAV SAVED FROM DOS to the game folder or to the scummvm folder installed from GOG, you cannot see this save in the game or the launcher.
Hmmm... curious. I'd check permissions, but also being android i've seen some oddities, files not showing up that i know are there when connected to a PC. Unless it has a FAT partition it's hard to say how it will react.
It's possible scummvm uses a COW configuration (
two directories, so one with the original and one with changes) this would let you reverse major possible issues if courruption happens, and also sandboxes if there's a virus. Though not having used scummvm i am guessing here.
Impc7r: This GOG way just hides everything saves, exe's and enforces its own way negating any other old ways to use a save file, it's my complaint but I guess I will have to work around
GOG probably has nothing to do with it. DOS games all save to the local directory or a directory within the game, and shouldn't point anywhere else. It isn't until you get to Win 95 and up where oddities of where things are stored with the registry, and then later with the appdata where saves
MAY be stored elsewhere, good for migrating terrible for making backups or editing saves.
Then default installation to Program Files is more or less discouraged for games, especially if you need to patch them or put save files there as it's a protected directory now... Which is unrelated but it's another oddity with games/saves.
edit: Looked up ScummVM, and i see it's an engine replacement for some games. Which is fine. It has it's own save system.
HOWEVER it also says you can put in the config
originalsaveload which i'd assume would do file save/loading rather than using it's own database and storage of files.
Though it mentions save location for games, so maybe save your game to see where it puts it, and then replace the file.
