d for going right and w for forward is darn unplayable! There seems to be no options for key rebinding in game!

How can devs still do this shit today?

What game?

Ok, seems galaxy brought me to the wrong forum.

What Remains of Edith Finch is the game.

That is really a silly oversight to forbid key rebinding on a walking sim. :/

Because they are lazy. Period. Some people respond by saying that you should just play the game "the way it was meant to be played", completely ignoring the fact that not all keyboards (or gamepads) are laid out the same way. I suggest using autohotkey if you're using Windows or Wine. If not, good luck. I had to make changes to my kernel gamepad driver, along with wine's axis remapping feature, to get a sane mapping for Trails of Cold Steel.

OK, I've opened a ticket with gog for this, if they cannot fix this issue (and also the fact that there are Steam files in the install folder) I'm just going to demand a refund.

I should really go and pirate games before buying them, I hate those surprises... :(((

Please complain to the developer, they're the ones who decided to make it that way and not recognise that Azerty is a fairly common keyboard layout in French-speaking countries and that ZQSD is more logical for movement there than WASD is (besides, even people using Qwerty may actually prefer other keys than WASD for movement for whatever reason, say ESDF (shifting WASD one key to the right), arrow-keys, numpad keys, or something entirely different).

If you're using Linux, there's qjoypad for using gamepads. Also, there's xmodmap for changing xorg's keymap. (I used it to cheat in Cookie Clicker by remapping the scroll wheel to click, allowing me to easily get one particular achievement.) Just be aware that these changes affect *all* programs when in effect.

Also, I could mention disabled gamers, some of whom are physically unable to play the game with the default control scheme, but might be able to with some creative key rebinding. I would say that that's enough of a reason for developers to implement key rebinding.

(By the way, does anyone know of an alternative to qjoypad that does not require xorg or any other GUI to be running?)

There is nothing wrong with my keyboard configuration (I'm on Windows 10), I see no point in having several keyboard configs as I use only one, it will just annoy me when I inadvertantly switch in other applications.

You do not ask a console player to get a keyboard or another type of gamepad because you were too friggin lazy a dev to implement such a basic feature.

Have you tried joy2key? I never felt the need, so I have it installed, but never tried it myself. I also tend to use input-kbd (from input-utils) to remap keys or gamepad buttons (which is also not X-related).

autohotkey binds keys to specific windows/apps. There is no global keymap change.

Console games are the prime example of games that do not provide any remapping, but should. Japanese games in particular often reverse the X/O mapping that most Western games use (X for action, O for cancel, vs. Japanese O for action, X for cancel). Remembering takes only a few seconds, but damn is it ever annoying for those few seconds. Console games get away with it because they can expect everyone to have the exact same input devices.

You can easily switch to QWERTY by pressing alt-left shift at the same time in the game. Problem solved.

The inclusion of Steam-client-related files doesn't make any difference, as long as they don't cause the Steam client to open (if you've got it installed) when you run the game. There are games on Steam these days which have Galaxy-related dummy files as well. I would be willing to bet you've already played numerous DRM-free games that have shipped with similar dummy files, and you never even noticed.

What Remains of Edith Finch is made in UE4, so it may be possible to perhaps edit some engine config files like you could do in UE3. Example:

Try finding "input.ini" and changing settings like:-

AxisMappings=(AxisName="MoveForward",Key=Up,Scale=1.000000)
AxisMappings=(AxisName="MoveForward",Key=Down,Scale=-1.000000)
AxisMappings=(AxisName="MoveRight",Key=Left,Scale=-1.000000)
AxisMappings=(AxisName="MoveRight",Key=Right,Scale=1.000000)

^ I've had to do that too in other UE4 games too to get Cursor keys to properly replicate WASD.

First, find the wizard in town. They will help you rebind the keys for a price. Of course getting to the wizard with a messed up keyboard layout is quite a challenge.

There's no way of doing that, those idiots packaged everything into a couple files.
Rebinding keys is impossible. It's not like games from the dawn of computing haven't been able to do so.
