tinyE: YES, that is illegal. :P

If you buy a BlueRay, make a bunch of copes, and hand them out to your friends, that is illegal. Same thing here.
avatar
hewiman2142: No it is not, how exactly do you even know if the installers are not the originals?
I'm sorry. Are you telling me that your friend bought all of these games, put them on a USB Stick, gave it to you, and then immediately erased them from his computer without installing or playing them and then proceeded to cancel his account so that he could no longer have access to them?

Is this what you are actually telling me?
avatar
PaterAlf: No, it's not allowed. DRM-free doesn't mean you are allowed to give copies of your games to other people. So even when your friend did buy the games, giving them to you is nothing less than piracy.
avatar
hewiman2142: Good to see you hold yourself to a higher moral standard.
It's not about higher moral standards? You asked if it is allowed and I gave you the answer. It is illegal, because by buying the games here you just get a single personal license.

hewiman2142: Would you have preferred me to give all of his personnel details?

No i should not! i should be able to obtain these keys if i have the game, i should not have to re-buy them. This is a drm free site, if somebody buys a game then they allowed to give it to their friends, period, how about you just answer the damn question.
avatar
tinyE: You gotta be shitting me. :P
Since when does DRM equate with illegal copy and distribution?
Who said it was iligal copy's that were made? i f you buy a game from a pawn shop or any retail store and you give it to somebody that is not iligal, buying a copy of a game and giving it to sombody is not against the law, you just made the assumption that my friend did not purchase these games and made iligal copys for distribution which is against the law. Besides do you think that these laws are in place because distributers hold themselves to some higher moral standard? no they do it because they can make a few more bucks selling individual copys.

Wtf are you talking about, when did i say that he erased him from his computer? i said i was unable to contact him as he had moved out of the country recently.

No what you did was make a bunch of heinous assumptions without any actual proof.

Okay this guy has two brain cells fighting for air here and I can't deal with that. :P

I'm going to throw him into the scammer thread, not for scamming but for running around in here ripping this place off with his pirated codes.

HOPEFULLY the rest of the forum and a Blue or two, not counting Tauto who approves of this bullshit, will pick up on this and cut this guy off.
This is going to be fun

From the FAQ:
9. Can I enjoy my purchases both on my laptop and desktop computer at home?
Yes. We do not limit the number of installations or reinstallations, as long as you install your purchased games on computers in your household. So yeah, if you've got a render-farm in the basement, you might actually break the world record for the number of legal Witcher installations in one household. However, if you think about installing your game on a friend's machine or sharing it with others then please don't do it, okay?

Just to throw this out there, unless your friend gifted the copy to you with GOG's own gifting system, this applies.

This is the time I'm having and willing to put here, so take it as you may.
COULD A BLUE PLEASE COME IN HERE AND AFFIRM THIS SO WE CAN GET ON WITH OUR LIVES!? :P

hewiman2142: So if a game is purchased you cant give it to somebody else?
Maybe you should read GOG's ToS. Especially this part:

"2.1 We give you and other GOG users the personal right (known legally as a 'licence') to use GOG services and to download and/or stream (depending on the content) and use GOG content. This licence is for your personal use."

Maybe you should read my answer again. I didn't make any assumptions at all.
Make this a sticky!™

I never did anything wrong, a friend of mine buys some games of gog and gives them to me because hes board with them. Did i get any sort of help with my legitimate question? no i did not. what i got was a bunch of self righteous 12 year old jumping up and down making a bunch of assumption about how these games were obtained, theres no proof that i have done anything wrong and in the eyes of the law illegally obtaining a game for free and then making copys for distribution is against the law. Buying a game and then giving "that "copy of the game to somebody is not iligal. you go ahead and do whatever you want big boy.

I've met people who thought DRM-free meant shareable. It's not the case.

DRM-free just means there are no technological things in place to keep you from making copies. DRM-free means that you can play your game without having to be connected to the internet, or pull out your magic word-finder, or get a glitch that eats your saves because it thinks you stole it.

By the TOS at the store, you can share your games only amongst your household.

An old article that I'm sute I won't find right now had a rep for GOG saying that you could treat yourbgame like a CD. You could loan it to a friend if you weren't playing it. That is against the TOS, but I don't think GOG will be upset if your friend D lent you some games that he's no longer playing to try out. Bit if you like the games, I'd recommend buying them.

Buying games puts mkney into game maker's hands. Those few extra bucks you talked about above are very important to developers. Many developers work for very little money. Some only make money after years and years of fee work (bioware doctors didn't take a dime for 5 years according to an interview I recently read in game informer). And those dollars deed their family. They also keep studios making new games. Lots of studios close when people don't buy their games.

As for your answer, GOG Galaxy is a non-required client. To purchase games on gog that work with your account, you can either purchase them, get them from a gift code, or get freebies during promos. Neverwinter nights was just given away, for instance.

I think most people here have prorated a game before for many reasons. But when a storefront makes a massive move to help people enjoy their classic games anf new games while trusting their customers by removing their DRM, Then it would be an appropriate response by people who are thankful for that decision to honor it through thoughtful purchases and diligently avoiding piracy.

Lastly, it is wrong. I don't think you care much about right and wrong for some reason, but enough people doing a wrong thing can really screw someone over. So I would applaud you if we're to do the right thing here. Try out the games, buy what you like.

hewiman2142: A few weeks ago a good friend of mine gave me a few games that he had purchased on GoG on a usb stick. The usb contained the installers for these games and nothing else. I understand that a serial key is needed to play games on gog galaxy but i lack any of these keys and have been unable to contact the friend who gave me the games in the first place as he has moved out of the country. Is there anything i can do?
If you're wondering why everybody's giving you crap:
What you and your friend are doing is considered piracy which, although I doubt you'll get arrested/can be stopped for it, is illegal and generally looked down upon.

You can't get the serial key unless you bought the game yourself. The only way you could get any help is if you asked support, but the chances of them giving you aid on pirated games is next to nil. So to answer your question:
No, there's nothing you can do. Either buy the games yourself or don't use Galaxy.

hewiman2142: Why ? i never did anything wrong,
Look... You don't buy "games" in digital stores. You "buy" two other things instead:
1. A personal, non-transferable license to play the game you "bought"
2. Access to the service of the store where you bought the license (service = download the game, get patches, etc.)

Your friend bought the games (=licenses) and was NOT allowed to share the installers. DRM free doesn't mean that you can give away copies of your installers. DRM free just means, that the guys who run the store (and the publishers and developers of the game) TRUST you, not to give away the installers and thus don't implement any technical means to prevent you from sharing them.
