Let's blame dem emulators....

.... right?! :P

NOPE!

They're awesome! They preserve history!
YAY! ;)

Gog is often mentioned in these articles since they provide a whole lot of rarities in here.
Glad to see that my dearly loved Millennium Racers (got mine on a cereal box some decade and a half ago, ha ha!) has a more polished version and now accessible to all!
Nothing beats the work of love. :)

Oh yep!
There are other examples out there, such as ToeJam and Earl 3 on the Dreamcast...
Awesome. Even if I never heard about a game, or it's one I don't like, preservation is a very important thing for any of us who see games as art.
"The first is the discovery and release of Millennium Racer: Y2K Fighters, a previously completely unknown 2001 Dreamcast port of a 1999 PC racing game. The title was recently discovered intact on a Dreamcast development kit, altered a bit to get it into a playable state, and then released as both an emulatable ROM and a burnable disc image that will work in actual Dreamcast hardware."

OK, so let's see...
"previously completely unknown"
"Dreamcast port of a 1999 PC racing game"
"altered a bit to get it into a playable state"

Basically what has been saved is an unknown unreleased console port of a PC game, which is not in its original state anymore.

I don't think the world would have lost much, if anything, if that game had vanished from the universe without a trace.

I'm not against things like this, in fact I'm 100% supportive of keeping older games available, but I also don't think this is a major achievement. Making "multimedia era" PC games working in Windows 10 or something would be much more important. Still, whoever did all that, good job.
It's also because of emulators that I can play games translated by fans.
A great example is this one:

We also have to thank emulation for things like Super Metroid Project Base. =)
Even without the games, a reasonably accurate emulator is a technological marvel that should be celebrated just because it is.

Just saw a vid of Catherine being fully played on a ps3 emulator.
Damn.

What would be romhacking without emulators, eh? ;)
Great example btw.

Something the youngest folks would enjoy a whole lot, eh?

DaCostaBR: preservation
That's something I'd love to work with if my main occupation were, welp, games ;P

Some would, some wouldn't.
At least with voice acting and everything it would be closer to their usual gaming environment than 8-bit block graphics and beeps.

I don't see what relevance younger players' preferences have with digital preservation though.

For preservation purposes, for memory sake and all... I guess.
I mean, ease of use. The way I see it, digital is overtaking a whole lot more faster than some predicted some decade ago.
Wouldn't something like Chrono Trigger not even be known at this point if it weren't for emulation? The game sold really baldly or not that much considering the budget to get the game out.

Didn't know the game sold poorly. Thanks!
