Almost right. If you purchase a game as a gift code, it is not added to your library. If you've sent it to yourself, you can redeem it if you choose, at which point you'll have the game, but the code will no longer be valid.

So, yes, as long as you're not trying to sell game codes (from ANY site) for money, they are fine with it.

True. Re-reading his post, that might actually be all he was talking about. But I've seen too many people in the past wanting Steam keys for all their GOG-purchased games so that they can have ALL OF THE EVERYTHING in one place.

I also suggest you find someone to act as a "middleman" for a trade like this. You'll have a hard time getting someone to send you codes first and someone new to the forum could fall prey to an unsavory type just looking to take your code.

Actually, personally if it were me, I might hold off on making this trade at all until I spent a bit more time around the forums. Just much easier all around that way.

Or look in the trading forum and before you make the trade, ask people in there who are making a lot of trades if they've had a good experience with the person you're considering trading with. I did this when I was a bit new here and couldn't believe how quickly and cheerfully everyone always responded. I was never bit by a bad trade and I learned early on what a great community this could be.

Isn't it interesting how when you treat people with trust they respond (generally) with kindness? I'm taking a cue from the GOG school of management for managing my team at work.

Anyhow based on what I read here I will probably hold off trading. I'd rather power through the relatively enormous list of games in my queue rather than think about whether I'll buy a gift code along with it, though in retrospect if it turns out I'll never play one it would be smart to have a code.

You can actually do this, but it is often frowned upon. Many giveaways ask that the winner play the game themselves, in which case it is in (very) poor taste to later trade what they won.

But yes, if you get a free game that you already own you may gift it. These generally come from GOG, but there have been GOG codes in bundles and stuff like that. For instance, I have gifted SC2000, Stalker, & Xenonauts, which I already had but unlocked during this sale.

In that case, it wouldn't be very ethical entering a giveaway in the first place, Why not let someone, who doesn't have that game and would like to play it, win it and not diminish their chances? Any case which I can think of, that would be morally justifiable, is if you entered a giveaway on behalf of somebody who, for whatever reason, cannot participate personally.

Entering a giveaway for a game you already have is a no-no, because, well, why? You already have the game.
Some GA's will state that you can enter for someone else, e.g. you want to gift a copy of a co-op game to your friend for co-op play, BUT, you have to state whom you're entering for and why. You can also enter for another GOG forumite if you want to increase their odds of winning the GA (if you think they're deserving)! :)
Generally, though, if you are entering a GA, it's assumed that you're doing so for yourself.

For trading purposes, be upfront. If you are trading for a game you intend to trade on - E.g. You want milk from Farmer Giles, he needs hay for his cows, you don't have hay. But Alfred the groundskeeper has tons of hay, and you trade your shiny red apples to him for the hay, so that you can get the milk - tell the person you're trading with. Then they are fully informed and can make a decision whether to trade with you under the circumstances.
Some people will trade extremely generously because they want to pass the fun on to someone else, and generally increase the happiness quotient of the world, so if you're not intending to play the game, it defeats their purpose. So, it's seen as skuzzy if you trade for a game with the implied agreement it's for your personal use, and then turn around and trade it away.

With the free games GOG gives out from time to time on sales, like Battle Realms, Sim City 2000 etc. this time, the general practice if you already have the game or don't want the game, is to regift it to someone who does want it, and has missed it. "I was marooned on a desert island with a dead seagull and a bag of cocaine while the sale and free games were on" kind of thing. ;)
