So the only reason I consider installing GOG Galaxy is the backup option (well getting a free game now doesn't hurt too). I've seen some custom made script here in forums that does the same thing, but I'd rather install a real, verified program.

So my question is for people who are using Galaxy and have tested the backup - how does it work? Please explain in details (how many clicks does it take, can you specify which files to download, etc)

At the time of writing this: It's like using your browser.
You have to click on every file to download, and they go into a queue.
The client does not even know later that it has downloaded the game, install would try and redowload it again. You have to manually install a backup game.
The only thing better than browser downloading is that the main game installation files are shown as a single file, rather than sevreal files - but all the files go into the queue later.
There is also a problem that the client acts like an idle program when downloading, so it will be shutdown by power saving and sleep mode... you have to disable sleep mode on your machine, otherwise there won't be many things downloaded in a session...

Works like a download manager (makes sure files will be downloaded without errors). It downloads an installer (one or a few files) to your PC. End of story.

Galaxy is a client, not a backup system. Get yourself an external hard drive or something similar, copy any files you download to it - that is a backup, i.e. something you can go get the files from in the future.

Me I have the internal working HDD, a RAID5 via USB3.1 for medium storage, then 4 separate quarterly backup HDDs some locally some well away. Should cover computer crashes all the way up to meteor strikes.

TL;DR; You don't need the client, you download the files via browser, GOG downloader or the client, these files you then copy to storage medium for future use in case the site disappears.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing atm, but I was thinking they would provide more utility in the client, instead of having to download each file separately like via browser, at which point there is no need to use the client indeed.

Well I don't use it so not really best placed to say, but I think it does have some additional parts of the GOG downloader in it, so would allow pausing and queuing. Never used GOG Downloader either for that matter, but each to their own.

Those 3rd party scripts (which I heavily use) are for a bit different purpose. They are for mass downloading (or updating) all your GOG game installers in one swoop to your hard drive. The scripts are safe to use, after all you can check the script yourself what exactly does it do, as long as you know python scripting language.

The Galaxy "backup option", or using the web browser, or the old GOG Downloader, are for downloading game installers one by one, ie. you need to click on each game/extras in order to download them.

So if your intention is to download only one or few GOG game installers at a time => use GOG Galaxy backup, or the web browser.

If your intention is to download all your GOG game installers to your hard drive or want an easy way to keep them updated (and you have lots of them so that downloading them one by one would be too much work), use a script/tool like gogrepo.py or lgogdownloader.
