Hello!

I have a question about an awesome old game that currently isn't available on GOG.com but I have the CD for. I was wondering if anyone can help me out with running the 1997 PC Game Nightmare Ned. It's also on the community wishlist so I'm also hoping we get get some more votes for that game!

Changing the compatibility settings for the game doesn't work at all and the best I can figure out is to use an emulator to run Windows XP Mode. This will run the game, however, it runs it way too fast so parts of the game are virtually unplayable as well as some of the game's audio doesn't sound right. I've gotten the game to work well with Windows XP Mode on Windows 7 but I was wondering if anyone on here knows how to get this old game running on Windows 10. I've also tried using ScummVM and Dosbox but neither one works to run the game.

I've also copied the files for the game to my computer and when I try running NITENED.EXE it says "System Error - The code execution cannot proceed because Dino2d.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem." and then right after that it also says "The code execution cannot proceed because dmix.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem."

So if anyone on here knows a thing or two about running old games and knows how to get Nightmare Ned up and running that would be awesome and greatly appreciated!

More then likely you will be defaulted to the old video settings 800X600, there are some games that just can't handle the higher resolutions.

Windows 10 isn't the most game friendly OS they've released after some further investigstion you could try manualy copying files from your CD to your game directory, after making sure hidden flies are visible, this should get the DLL into the folder so you can at least troubleshoot further.

Maybe this will help? Somebody there had similar problems, but with another game. They had to copy missing files manually from installation CD. Maybe you'll have to do the same. According to that page it's a Windows game, not a DOS game. Why are you suggesting DOSBox?

it's an emulator for running older software which this game is, windows was orginaly based around DOS hence the CMD which is still available in windows 10.

DOSBox is specifically meant for running old MS-DOS programs/games, not (old) Windows games.

It may be possible to install some sort of old Windows (3.1?) within DOSBox (e.g. I recall running some old Windows 3.1 adventure game like that, might have been the Windows version of Uninvited), but by the screehshots it seems this game also supports 3D acceleration, which I am pretty sure is not possible from within DOSBox, even if you did somehow install Windows 9x inside it.

Well, I gave it a shot but Dosbox says that this program cannot run in Dosbox. I tried it out but it's still not working. I'm not quite sure what to do 0_0

Forget about DOSBox, that is not the answer for this game.

You mentioned errors about two dll files, so personally I would first google what those dlls are in the first place, to get some idea where the issue might be (e.g. copy protection?).

Interesting though that you said you got it working well on Windows 7, so I wonder what is the difference in Windows 10 then? Maybe dgvoodoo would help?

ok so after some research and playing around Virtualbox was the program I was thinking of when I said dosbox

I unfortunatly do not have an older version of windows to play with att he moment to set up my virtual machine, but it looks rather easy to configure.
you could probably pick up or download a older version of windows fairly cheaply and set up a "virtual machine" to run this and other games
