Oddeus: Or a notebook/laptop with build in microphone. Also it comments on everything. I had to silence it, but still it uses up resources in the background.

Tauto: A nagging pc, but I did notice some fixes for this and at the time it didn't worry me because I don't have a microphone nor would I get one.Surely these bugs have been complained to MS?
It´s not a bug, it´s a feature :)
I don´t think, that Microsoft will change anything on that Cortana thing. It is as intrusive as they wanted it to be.

Tauto: Nope, Win 7 and new pc will be,yep you guessed it 10. I've been researching for a couple of days and have found some tweaks but also a lot of complaining about 10.

AB2012: Many games will work the same. Some will require more tweaking / have more issues. Here are the results of my testing W10 (compared to W7):-

- W8 introduced a weird 30fps cap for No One Lives Forever. Early W10 builds removed that cap but then had constant stutter when moving the mouse (almost like VSync was broken "back-end" and the game had input issues running at +600fps. Later W10 builds improved this so the game now mostly plays normally, but it still stutters when using zooming / using a weapon scope. This can be fixed with dgVoodoo but that in turn can break keyboard / mouse input after an ALT-TAB. W7 still plays perfectly with zero compromises and only a fraction of the tweaking required.

- Maniac Mansion Deluxe threw up color corruption and oddly squashed the game into the top left 1/4 of the screen (as it did for several other 2000-2005 era flash games). W7 has no issues.

- Some games have many more issues running Exclusive Fullscreen vs W7. You may need to force Borderless Windowed.

- Sam & Max Season 1-3 require XP SP3 compatibility to be ticked to not crash. This wasn't needed for W7.

- Age of Mythology crashes if changing any settings inside the game (due to resolution change). You have to mess about with creating user.cfg in the startup folder. W7 works perfectly.

- Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines crashes with a DX5 error, but can be fixed by renaming from comandos.exe to commandos.exe (2x m's) to bypass enforced compatibility issues.

- DirectPlay has been deprecated, ie, you need to install it manually via Control Panel -> Programs & Features -> Turn Windows Features On / Off -> Legacy Components. This is needed for several games like Age of Empires, Commandos:BEL, Diablo 2, etc.

^ I gave W10 a fair shot and tested over +250 older games on it, I installed Classic Start Menu to make it look like W7, and I didn't mind some of the extra work involved in tweaking some to run. But my feelings towards it in general was that it's the least pleasant Windows I've ever used, it didn't (and probably never will) actually feel like 'my own PC' anymore the same way MS-DOS 2.0 through to W7 did due to MS's new Software As A Service direction, (ie, "the user is the product"). About the only "nice words" I can say is that so far, Microsoft hasn't removed support for DX5-9 API games - something forced updates and "rolling releases" gives them the capability to do 5-10 years down the line that would leave many retro-gamers royally screwed.

Best of luck if you can get W10 to work for you, but expect quite a bit more tweaking for many older games than on W7, some games sold here on GOG are "supported for W7-8 but not W10" for a reason, and in case it doesn't work out, both Coffee Lake & Ryzen CPU's & chipsets do actually work on W7 (despite MS's fear-mongering to the contrary). Not for every chipset / motherboard, but I made a detailed post here in the past that explains everything on the subject should you need to "downgrade".
Gawd Strueth, what is MS doing trying to do,rule the world? If it's that bad why aren't there mass protests as they seem to be starting to affect Governments, nowadays.MS is indeed over stepping the line and where will this end? It's my bloody Pc and NOT MS's and hard earned money was used to pay for it and yet people now think that they are renting?

As far as I'm concerned,if not needed/used by some user's then it's a bloody bug unless there is a choice to turn on/off?

pkk234: I use it cause I'm not PC savvy enough to do otherwise.

I've seen people shit on basically every windows it seems like, then retroactively circlejerk to XP.
I kind of disliked Windows XP back in the day, it never clicked with me. It may be that it sucked at release but got better and more reliable later on, but my impression of it was already ruined by then.

Win 7 > Win XP.

Windows 7 is, hands down, the Windows-OS I've had the least problems with ever. Ran like a clock.

Tauto: WIN 10? Well,if those that use it have any.
It works and does what I need it to do, and the UI improvements over the first version are good enough for my purposes.

Karterii1993: I don't hate Windows 10, so those are my nice words.

It's more that I dislike the current state of things, where when I install the OS I am getting asked all this stuff about 'sharing my location' and 'save your stuff on the Microsoft cloud' and 'link a Microsoft account' and etc. "But don't worry, it's all for the sake of convenience!!"

And then Cortana comes up and tells you she can make everything soooo much more convenient, like why even Google stuff when you can just ask Cortana? She can even recognize your voice!!

No thanks, I think being able to order Chinese food in less than 3 minutes is convenient enough. I mean, I'd say the way they ordered Chinese in that Windows 95 guide with Jennifer Aniston was convenient enough, but I won't complain about not having to use a Fax anymore.
Cortana can be not installed when installing you know. :)

Okay, then it shouldn't be on the pc as I told builder to turn off all in setup when installing W10.

Some builders are lazy or dumb. That's why I install my own OS/updates.
Well, it's like this. Got my first look/play around today and I ain't that impressed.
Windows 10 is decent enough, but you have to spend some time to set it up properly.

It does mean using the Group Policy Editor to disable forced updates (sorry, Pro only) and cleaning up the default installed apps to kill Candy Crush and advertisements (aka recommendations).

The worst thing about Windows 10 was the forced major updates - walk away from the computer to grab a coffee and come back to find it installing Windows 10 and automatically uninstalling your cherished programs.

Now that 1903 has been released, they've finally realised that surprise, unsolicited OS upgrades are a bad idea. Only took them 4 years...

For user-interface etc., I don't really find it that much better than Windows 7, maybe even worse (like how computer settings are partly in the newer simpler interface and partly in the "old" control panel interface)...

...but it is the newest windows version, meaning it will have the latest features, support for new things etc. (e.g. SSD and whatever).

I also kinda like that the desktop is "simpler" than Windows Vista/7 desktop with Aero. Some of that Aero stuff just seems kinda useless and gimmicky, trying to make the Vista/7 look "cooler" but in practice making it just worse, like semi-transparent items and window borders and whatnot.

I am still using both Windows 7 and 10, and so far I haven't really experienced feeling in Windows 7 that "damn I wish this had that and that new feature from Windows 10...". Then again, I can still use Windows XP and even 98SE interface just fine, but at least in them I do get that feeling sometimes, like not being able to find the program or item I want by simply starting to type it in into the start menu.

I get to see it regularly whenever I publicly mention that I'm still running Vista. The cacophonous laughter gets hard to drown out.

I'll let you know. I just bought a new laptop, so I will be configuring it over the next little while. I still have previous versions, so I may be tempted to multi-boot. I am also considering a Linux partition.

Win-7 seems to have a real thirst for security updates. I'm not sure why, but Microsoft insists on ¼GB monthly spyware updates. What this entails mystifies me, since that must be close to the size of the entire OS. I hope Win-10 is less needy, but I doubt it.

Win10(my version anyways) has less updates for malware detection as far as I can see.

Yeah, will be tweaking for a while. It took me 2 hours just to find windows update and adjust it so it doesn't shut down in the middle of a game.

Same here,since yesterday.(desktop).

Windows 10 is best when properly optimised with M$ store and ad crap turned off or removed, along with a firewall config that only allows the internet and the software you want to work.
Windows 10 doesn't have a monthly subscription fee to use it and we all know that's on Microsoft's mind for Windows 11 or Windows 12 or whatever. IT'S THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE I'M SO EXCITED!!!12
