skeletonbow: Clive Barker's The Undying springs to mind right away.
It has both. The first level until you beat the first boss is traditional horror IMO but also the best part because partially the atmosphere is amazing. I remember playing the game when I was 13, I didn't have the courage to play too much so I gave up. Finished it last year. Highly recommended.

I found an old thread when going through the archive here where people talked about Nocturne. I think it's more of a detective story but it seems to have horror elements. It can be tricky to get to work on modern OS but here's a solution that worked for me.

When I got it on DVD about 12 or so years ago it creeped me right out. Made the hair on my neck stand up, which is rare for even creepy games. :)
I can vouch for Clive Barker's Undying too. I finished it a month ago and it's a great game indeed.

That happened for me as well. I really liked the ending too, made me think about the possibilities of the Undying universe. It's a pity they never made a proper sequel.

Damnit, this thread reminds of my backlog specifically about Silent Hill games. I haven't played any of them enough yet. :(
I was thinking the other week I should play the 2nd one as it's relatively easy to set up on a modern computer but alas, I already have too many games installed.

Here's another vote for Clive Barker's Undying. It's still the scariest game that I've every played, but it actually has a pretty decent story line as well (which unfortunately got weaker during the second half of the game). Definitely worth a look.
Ok, holy shit... Outlast does it. I just installed it for some beta tests and played it for about 45 minutes and the hair is standing up on my neck. It just scared the crap out of me LOL. Looks like it's going to be a great game. Creepy as hell, and the light atmospheric creepy music and sound effects are just enough to set the mood.
I didn't put Undying here because it is FPS-ish, even if not "in your face", I felt like it was more action-y than alma was looking for, but, yes, it is superb.

Clive Barker is the master of horror, imo.
Silent Hill 1-3
+1 to everyone, many helpful posts!

Bought the gog version a few months ago, but somehow forgot about it.
I'll give it a try, thanks!

Mr.Caine: Silent Hill 1-3
Played all of them.
I wish the first Silent Hill had been released in PC.
Thanks for the suggestions, in any case!

Don't know if it has already been mentioned, but maybe give Kholat a try?

https://www.gog.com/game/kholat

It's fairly slow-paced and atmospheric, and doesn't have a strong focus on action or jump scares, so it might be the kind of experience you are looking for.

I also agree about Clive Barker's Undying. And Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is probably one of the greatest Horror games ever created, but sadly not available here.

I just voted on the wishlist:

Hard to find a (legit used) copy, but AMBER: Journeys Beyond fits the bill perfectly.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Since Bethesda is already on board here on GOG, I hope we'll get it here some time soon...

No harm in voting for it in the Community Wishlist.
