What I mean is, instead of ghosts or demons appearing in front of you all the time, a horror game with great atmosphere, and where you're scared about what is going to happen next.
You can't create good suspense if you know there's a monster in every bloody room in the game.
If I wanted a swarm of enemies I'd simply play Doom games.
Any suggestion?

I don't play a lot of horror games but I have to recommend the Amnesia games, especially Dark Descent and Justine. Good atmosphere and Justine's ending is just mind-blowing.

All great.^
Also the Cat Lady games. And what is the game here where you play the Anti-Christ as a child? That's a good one but I forget the name.

That should be Lucius.

Lucius maybe?
Ninja'd

As for horror games with great atmosphere, I'll come back to this thread later, have to remember the names of those games first. :/

I would have to say if you are into a third person narrative story with horror in it then you would love alen wake

and more of a oldies feel would be the Alone in the dark series, pretty much the first one is great and if you are more into the classic resident evil games like 2 and 3 then you would like ALONE IN THE DARK: THE NEW NIGHTMARE

Here is one to try and consider if you did not yet is Stalker Shadow of chernobyl, It has the elements of a thinking mans shooter and horror in one. you can find yourself shooting down monsters to military men then going deep underground to broken down tunnels with dead guys all over the place knowing something can kill you at any corner depending on the difficulty you play.

Consider any of those mentioned and you won't be upset.

That's the one. Sounds like I'm the only one who liked it. :P

Oh and thank you valiant. You chimed in first and I missed it.

Yeah, I liked it too, especially the bathing scene...what !? Don't judge me! :P
The last door, it's a short, lovecraft inspired , pixelated horror. Very engaging though.

Nah, don't worry about it.
What about SCP
or Nightmare House 2 (it's a mod, you may need Half-Life 2)[/url]
Someone once recommended Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason to me as an excellent unconventional horror game. But I don't think its available now. I didn't get it back then either.
There's quite a few great atmospheric horror games here on GOG.

I vote for The Last Door as well. Perfect atmosphere.
Personally, I don't mind monsters in horror games. But I do think a lot of horror titles are too "in your face" regarding the storytelling. A few exceptions:
Knock-Knock
Slender
Lone Survivor (haven't played it much, mind)

'You are Empty' was a scifi-horror-shooter which really manage to keep from over-explaining everything. The beginning is way scary, but the horror slows down after that. Notice how the cutscenes manages to stay creepy and mysterious:
