Tonight I watched a BBC documentary on Grime and the history of it.
While it hit most points, and important artists in its hour running, it did miss out one major factor:
CHANNEL U
U was a satellite channel run much like many music channels at the time in the UK - text [artist name and track] to XXXXX, cost (i forget how much but it was something like £1.50 i think).
U exclusively showed urban music, but pretty quickly saw a massive drop in more popular music on its general running time and pretty soon all you saw was real deal uk hip hop and grime.
With that in mind, heres a playlist on youtube I found with some genuine classics, and some crap. All of them ive seen so far got massive airplay over the years the channel ran. Bear in mind almost all the tracks were produced in bedrooms, live on rat radio or just ever really produced.

Edit: warning - sound levels and quality are fucking nuclear ping pong

The only hip hop album I've listened all the way through is Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest...

644.
What a shame.
Earlier tonight I came accross this: Krizz Kaliko re-signing. I honestly don't know what is really going on here. KK has been my favorite of all the Strange Music crew.

yeah, but Grime was very much a DIY scene, so thats expected. thing is, a lot of artists that ended up with good production from getting a deal didnt do so well - their sound just wasnt raw enough anymore. this is comparable to punk and much of the metal and industrial scenes.
i would guess country and blues variants as well.
