Sachys: I'm wondering now - even though I've experienced Germanic hip-hop since I was given a groups demo tape (this was 1993), is the overall scene there still in its infancy? - or are Rollo & Foxn more the norm (and its rather developed to a localised styling?).
Neither, I guess. That's just what I like to listen to myself. ;) Rollo & Foxn are active underground rappers but not very well known (their track is from 2013), while the track from Die L.P. is underrated old stuff from 1998 that I just rediscovered. Foxn from Rollo & Foxn and Scu from Die L.P. formed the crew Verrückte Hunde of which I posted videos above, and their sound is consciously anachronistic 90's hip hop with references to Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang Clan etc. They don't aim to be popular or try to innovate, they just create the music that they enjoy themselves.
To tell the truth, I don't really have a clue about what's 'hot' in the German hip hop scene at the moment or whether there are any actual trends, or if there even is an active (more or less homogenic?) hip hop scene and what it's like. I'm kind of stuck in the 90's myself, and apart from the occasional refreshing underground crew - I mean refreshing even by being anachronistic and not following lame trends ;) - I usually don't listen to German hip hop all that much. Too much posing, too many rappers taking themselves too seriously or being serious homophobic macho dickheads and then declaring their primitive lyrics as smart, ironic or all in good fun, just an image that they've created as an artist or whatever; too many bands I once liked 'innovating' by switching from good old funny 90's rap to boring and pretentious pop or electro, too much mainstream ghetto wannabe gangster rap with kindergarten flows to appeal to (pre)teens; I guess in a way I'm a hip hop cliché myself, but for me in large parts German hip hop has actually taken a step back from the 90's and got worse instead of better - which doesn't mean that there aren't any cool groups anymore, just that the tracks that I deem cool myself, often sound like 90's hip hop. ;)
Still, I think there's quite some variety among the videos that I and Bavarian posted in this thread; I just don't know how representative they are for anything. Just as in the US, I think the best known, most popular and trendy rap in Germany is the least interesting one. :P
