That article is pretty weird, btw. I mean it lists lots of great hip hop artists, but the definition of what is alternative hip hop and who is part of it seems quite arbitrary to me. Even worse than the definition of "indie games", it seems. It looks like according to the author alternative or "real" hip hop is everything that is not explicitly gangsta, so why put such a general label on it at all? Lots of people nowadays act like hip hop is "gangsta music", as if gangsta is the norm and there are a few "alternatives" to it, when in reality gangsta rap is just the most commercially successful subgenre of US hip hop (or rap). I bet the metalheads would never even think about calling something "alternative metal" just because it's different than the stuff that appears in the charts and is played on the radio. ;)
But the oddest thing is that the author almost exclusively lists US and Canadian artists, but then all of a sudden and without obvious reasons inserts e.g. CapaRezza as the only Italian (and Italian language) rapper, and South African group Die Antwoord rapping in Afrikaans and Xhosa ... Must be personal favorites. :D
