As a practical solution to the problem of blocking that which one does not want to see, without the problems of a central authority deciding for you and everyone else what should and shouldn't be seen, install uBlock Origin, or something like. The "block element" function allows fine control of blocking from entire sites to single elements on specific pages.

Works with (that I know of, probably more) Firefox and Brave browsers. Yes, there is a learning curve and some work (finding, installing the programs) involved, but if the concern is actually preventing unwanted content on one's own machine, why not get that result with a little DIY?

p.s.
Individual definitions of how much is "a little DIY" might vary greatly. Fair enough.

It would be most welcome. Unfortunately, a lot of people around here tend to go ape shit around here when such a feature is suggested, because apparently wanting the simple convenience of not having porn like Being a Dik (aka Uncanny Valley of the Sex Dolls) dumped into every search for "RPGs" makes one a "puritan" out to burn everyone's wank material.

Which only allows you to choose what to search for, not what to exclude from search. That's not the same thing. And you have to use the tags every time for a new search. I'm never going to be interested in any porn game. They will only ever clutter my search. Would be much more convenient to be able to hide them with one click forever.

Not to mention the tags are kindy... wonky. I mean "great soundtrack"? The hell does that mean? Who decides which games have great soundtracks? Do all the other games have shit soundtracks? Why isn't there a tag for "great" anything else, like graphics or voice acting?

There are lots of games on Gog that I have no interest in playing, yet when they appear on the front page, best-seller or on-sale list I just.... you know... ignore them and continue on with my day.

I don't need a whole system put in place to hide them from my pure innocent eyes, I just use my mouse wheel and scroll elsewhere; it seems so easy and yet apparently so complicated for some.

Maybe they should implement a filter based on age rating, though I'm not sure how that would affect things based on territory since plenty of games rated M (17) in North America are already rated 18 elsewhere. A case by case basis would probably be a headache, but honestly the porn games already have identifiable thumbnails. I don't care for certain genres of games either, so I simply ignore them.

Alternatively, if GOG wanted to advertise porn games, maybe they should actually show the porn bits instead of these cheesecake underwear poses with maybe a smidge of nipple. If porn sites have porn ads, then I should be seeing some juicy bits on the games' pages.

I'd love to permanently hide all games that require a dedicated video card, even if it is just to make the game run reasonably well, because they're never going to work with my laptop so I won't be purchasing them. It's no more unreasonable to not wanting to see games with adult content, health hazard seizure graphics, genres you don't like, or anything else that might be unwanted.

The thing is though that games with adult content really are the easiest to ignore, more so than other things that might be unwanted. You'll get a warning if you attempt to go to their store page if the thumbnail wasn't suggestive enough for the sort of game it is.

While I do support filters, I do not think sexual media should be suppressed in favor of violent media. That sort of thing simply doesn't make any ethical sense. Pro-violence promotion at the expense of sexuality has implications about the values of a society. It should be the opposite, simply because sex by itself doesn't hurt people.

I'm not in favor of not letting developers publish their stuff here, because... well, even if I think something's garbage, what's the harm of at least giving people a chance to buy it? What you're suggesting, though, seems pretty reasonable. I do think that there's some legitimately excellent adult stuff, like Muramasa from JAST that deserves visibility, but the Kagura stuff.... yeaaaahhh... maybe not so much.

I Wouldn't care whether or not this was an option except that GOG would falsely list Senran Kagura and other things under porn. So I really want them to not do this.

Just be a better adult around any children when you let them have access to the internet and your problem with what they look at is solved. GOG does not require any more measure than they already have. Besides which, most kids see more bare flesh on any summer beach, than what is advertised here prior to any warning of "Do you wish to continue to this 17+ title?".

Imagine if people were naked on a beach, GADZOOKS! They would be scarred for life!! *GASP!*

Oh wait. No. They wouldn't and neither would they care if they see what little is advertised on GOG.

Excellent paragraph there! I love horror games but the dead eyes staring back at me from the thumbnails of those games is way more creepy than anything I play.

In games I like maximum gore and violence but hate seeing anything sexual. In real life I'm a pacifist who loves a shag. Not sure all of the people who want a porn filter are who you think they are or that this is always a moral/ethical issue. Especially since OP only said they want to hide them because they're not interested in them.

Again, the video store analogy applies.

You can have movies with sex scenes and/or with violence on display (the Wild Bunch, Angel Heart, The Godfather, Flesh and Blood, whatnot...). And yet, the XXX movies, the porn genre, is considered distinct, and has its own corner. It's a different, separate thing. And those who claim it is not (but but I'm renting "Sodomy Schoolgirls 5" for the plot !! it's... it's art !!) are hypocrites.

Fact is, both GOG and customers benefit from this hypocrisy. The customers can rationalize it as "I'm uh, playing a videogame, it's because of the gameplay", and GOG can cash it on it. Things would feel more embarrassing (and therefore less lucrative) in a dedicated porn section.

There are actually sex scenes in videogames (with varied degrees of cringe or deliberate comedy), and it could be part of any narrative. But as with movies featuring it, even sleazy exploitation thrillers actually, it's still different from straight porn industry products. And the confusion benefits no one (because then you get Gobliiins or Citizen Kabuto lumped in the same category as Rapelay - guess who benefits in claiming they are the same thing).

And behind this, the whole, genuine, question of a society where kids are encouraged to consume porn as early as possible. It's wonderful at a commercial level. It's still questionable at a societal, ethical, psychological one. But obviously, all the questions it raises have already definitively been answered by the target audience and GOG's accountants.

It would help me more if I could manually put games on ignore (for example for collections of games I own separtly).


A game being rated 18+ does not mean it's not allowed to advertise it.
I am strictly against a special filter like for adult games. But ... if we get a configurable filter that we can set to exclude certain types of games, where we can decide for ourself what we want to see and what not.
There is nothing bad about adult games in general. After all we are not all Americans. Some of us love blood and gore, others love boobies.

So far the only option is to ignore what we don't want to see. A configurable filter and a "ignore" function? Count me in.

1) Hence the latter part of my statement; "they just need to be made usable by the end user".
2) Well, I didn't say the system was even good or competent, just that it exists. My optimal experience would be something akin to the imageboards with user definable blacklists, and a plethora of other features.
