My wife's biggest dream is to backpack Europe for a month or so in summer. We love to see the things nobody else sees. No Sistine chapel, but the local coffee shop would be fun. And no tour guides, but real people. And maybe see the Sistine chapel too.

We wouldn't be able to go for a few years, and when we do, we'll never be able to afford it. So my wife's dream is crushed. But I told her all about you people and said, "I bet we could stay at goglodytes houses and see the real Europe!"

So if we were to go in a few years, can we stay at your house?

Unfortunately (or fortunately) the way things are going, when you are done backpacking the States won't let you back in.
Not sure this is really advisable, after all a lot of really strange people are into gaming, from nerds with poor personal hygiene to potential mass killers. Just imagine the headlines..."He met his killer on GOG".
Maybe you should try something like that Airbnb or whatever it's called.

As an actual inn keeper with, don't laugh, a very respectable reputation, I advise against Airbnb.

It's actually worse because Airbnb doesn't have any real contact with the establishments, they just get told the room is available and to get it rented. You never get a clue as to the condition of the place, cleanliness, accoutrements, or the sanity of the renters until you actually get there.
I want to say you can pitch your tent in my garden, but it sounds too much like a sexual euphemism

I thought they had ratings, reports from previous users etc. so you could get some idea where you're going to end up.
In any case, I myself wouldn't trust random strangers anyway.

They do but it all comes 2nd hand.
If I can't talk to an actual person who owns or works the place then I don't trust it.

"In a few years" might be too late anyway...the way things are going, something drastic will probably happen well before. Better hurry, Europe might not be there anymore when you want to go there :-)

Come to Canada instead! With our crappy dollar your us funds will go a lot further. You don't have to wait "many years". We don't have the Sistine chapel but the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal is very nice. We are friendly people and have great beer. And no you can't stay at my place, now get off my lawn!
Tallima do you have me muted or something? :P

Define "Europe". For instance if I wanted to go see "America", I probably wouldn't fulfill my dreams by living in some backwater area with nothing to see. I'd want to see New York, Las Vegas, Miami beach, blaa blaa blaa... Not some old cottage in Alabama.

I could see myself letting some couple stay at e.g. my secondary home (which I am renting away)... but the thing is I don't think there is that much interesting to see here. You can't even see the Eiffel tower from here, it is several thousand miles from here I think.

I presume when Americans think of "going to Europe", they think of seeing the Eiffel tower, the medieval castles, etc... Shit, even I have never seen any of those even though I live in Europe.

No. You can't pm me?

U do want to visit your place some time.

I used to live I. Michigan, so Canada trips were pretty easy. I've seen some Canada. I don't really want to see Montreal, but that's where my family comes from. My immigrant greatx100 grandfather is buried there. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Archambault

And total strangers are, in my experience, pretty decent. Every now and then you meet a freak, but most people are decent.

Nonetheless, I'll take it as a "no!" Infant believe you destroyed our dreams! We'll just have to get some little rooms.

I have a relative who runs a successful Airbnb and I bet we could find a reputable place to lie our head for cheap. But we'll see. If we save up properly, maybe we can slgetbsone cheoa hotels. I have some friends here and there in Europe that might also have a place to stay.

Should be fun!

True Story

I was working a book store here in the U.P. a few years ago and someone asked me about the best nature hikes and waterfalls. I told him I really didn't know. He didn't get super pissed but he let it know that if I lived up here I should know this stuff. Guy in the back of the store overhears us and speaks up, "I've been living in NYC for 50 years and I've never been to the Statue of Liberty; get off his ass."

No, I just wasn't sure you were seeing my posts. :P

False alarm, and yet one more sign that I am paranoid.
