I'm not sure if it was said before, but you can make this a lot more convenient by creating a "bookmarklet" out of it, simply prepend javascript: to the code in OP and make it the bookmark URL.

There's something really ironic in the fact that I still get reply notifications for this post four years later, and that I still need to use the method mentioned in the post to get rid of those notifications...

I've tested this code right now in Firefox 108.0.1, and it worked. Could you give more details (browser version, installed extensions etc.)? Have you tried to clear cookies or use private window?

Perhaps in your glazing over you missed an important detail or two? The code line and the sentence just before it contain all the information needed.

It works just fine in Firefox.
I have Firefox configured to always work in private browsing mode, clear all cookies on closing and use advanced tracking protection in addition to using the uBlock Origin addon. Clearing the purple dot as mentioned in the first post of this thread still works just fine.

I made a couple posts about the worrying changing of what is DRM in their recent year in review post, where I learned about the added DRM in Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, and made a couple comments for the first time in years, and caught the purple dot for my trouble.

Well, like I sad around there, just another example of how the rest of the platform is substandard and I only tolerate it because I care about DRM-free games. Once the floodgates open to all sorts of always online games and online activations this place will just become Worse Steam, and while it's a huge blow to games preservation as a whole, they'd be getting what's coming to them.

Has anyone here wondered why are they bothered by the dot in the first place?

Because (for those that are unable to remove it) it is displayed whether they have a notification or not. Which can be jarring for those that have to keep checking to see if they actually have received a new notification. Or those that get poxed off with it constantly 'being there', that they may try ignoring it, thus possibly missing any new notifications that may actually be real. Think: OCD gone a bit awry...
