It's safe as any other official repository, it's just that this one is in a form of a PPA.

If you followed that terminal instructions, then you not only updated GPU drivers but also kernel and some other system stuff that's not selected by default in Update Manager (but you can change that in its settings). Don't worry, your system is now fully up-to-date :)

Do you have Privacy > Clear History When Firefox Closes > Site Preferences checked? If yes, it will also clear your cookie exceptions every time it exits.

And about scaling and etc. I didn't play around with that much, but you might want to research using xrandr: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xrandr

it gives quite granular control.

LOL note to self don't check delete site preferences ;) This did the trick.

Still having issues with the video card spinning up. It eventually calms down, but even when autoscrolling though a thread it'll fire up for a good while before it shuts down again, only to fire up at the smallest provocation.

I updated to those drivers (355) and when I loaded up the nvidia settings on a blank desktop, I open it and go to thermal I can see my card is at "Thermal / Power Level 3" (I think that's what it's called - not temperature level - it just briefly maxes to the highest core speed and spins up the fan like it's under load, for simple tasks, then drops back down). Odd...

*edit - it's under the PowerMizer that I saw it at max clock. It seems a bit better now but I still am a tad worried about the fan spinning up so eagerly doing non-taxing things. I even cleaned out the computer thinking it was loaded up with dust (it was and that does cause my fans to go nutso LOL but this isn't that).

Good thing you found a solution thanks to shmerl, but in relation to what we talked about in the other thread concerning this, something's off. When you check (if that's what you did at first) Always use private browsing mode you shouldn't be able to check Clear history when Firefox closes, it's greyed out.

One more thing I should've told you before regarding those terminal commands, never execute the ones you're not sure of what exactly they are doing. And type them manually, don't just copy-paste, but if you still do at least check visually they're the same commands (JS injections). You're fine this time knowing that if something fishy went on, resident Linux experts would explode on it in a matter of seconds ;)

LOL yeah they seemed like pretty powerful commands that's why I made the joking type post (what the heck did I just do!?!?!?! ;) ). I'll be careful executing most - though one of the nice things I learned when I first was asking questions in this thread was that it seems hard to pull nasty stuff if I stick with official repositories. Is there a way to only get official stuff? If I use get X repository, is there something in the name of what I'm pulling that will let me know it's official?

Also, I'm starting to think I'm being a bit overly cautious worrying about my card spinning up. When I ran the NVIDIA utility, is there a way to force changes I make to "stick" - it seems like the system is changing my resolution from what I pick to "auto" - which is fine and good I suppose, as it's auto is picking the monitor default that I'd pick any way. But just for the purpose of getting familiar with the new OS I'm curious what I'd need to do.

*edit likewise on Firefox, is there a way to make the browser "remember" that I like to view pages "Zoomed In" one level? Seems to reset when I close the browser. Yes, I realize I've been an idiot a few times when it comes to my own settings mucking things up once or twice ;)

In KDE if you change resolution in System Settings > Display and Monitor it should stick.

I thought FIrefox remembers zoom level for each page by default. Check about:config and find browser.zoom.siteSpecific. It should be set to true. If it's already true for you, then I'm not sure why it doesn't work.

Caution when executing unknown commands applies to all of them, not just the ones dealing with (un)installation.
And yes, you can use solely official repos by making sure they are the only uncommented entries in you software sources, which is the case now if you haven't added anything other than that official GPU PPA.

Every once in a while there is a question comes up where search engines just don't have any answers. I remember recently trying to move a LVM PV within a disc and damned if I can find that information. It's buried under a ton of trivial information about moving it between discs. Apparently, it's not possible to move the start of the partition to earlier in the disk.
