If you're looking for a classic PC RPG, the Ultima series is pretty great from what I hear. I'm going to dive into it once I get through another similar game, but it is the earliest RPG series besides Wizardry and is the granddaddy of all RPGs. In many ways the games have not been surpassed. Not sure how much roleplaying and party management there will be. Ultima 7 is the cream of the crop, and is the best starting point. Important point: Read the manuals. These old complex games actually have required reading!
Why, oh why, GROOT did you have to do this to me? :P

ToEE is the very reason why I joined GOG last month.

I got tired of tracking down the physical media every few years for the last 15 years or so.

Last time, I could not find the play disk since it was in an old disconnected DVD drive.

It caused me - err, provided an excuse for an experiment - to go ahead & upgrade to an 850 PSU & an GTX 1080 to see if the nodes problem would go away with an 34 inch monitor.

It took 15 years to finally play the areas without any problems/slowdowns even though the Fire Node still almost brought the 1080 to its knees - LOL.

(Do you remember ever going to bed and waking up in the morning to complete the next move and going to work to wait for another move and going to bed again for the next move back in the day?)

Now, I will have to install the Temple+ mod and play it again (after completing my own NWN 1 mod that is taking forever since I have forgotten so much after all these years). :)

Thanks for letting me know about the mod!

bones82013: True.

As a side note, I use the Circle of Eight Modding Community for some of the games.

GR00T: The only way to lplay ToEE. Did you use the Temple+ mod as well?
Play Fallout with Fallout Fixt. It makes the game 100 times better.

Leroux: How about Steve Jackson's Sorcery then? I hear it starts out as a regular Choose Your Own Adventure game in Parts 1 & 2 and then becomes more and more of an RPG in Parts & [url=http://store.steampowered.com/app/504800/Sorcery_Part_4/]4. Haven't played it enough myself yet though, and AFAIK you don't play a party, just a single character. It's also not available on GOG, only on Steam or for your mobile devices. But it's supposed to be pretty good.

arhodes8809: Yes. Sorcery is exactly the sort of adventure rpg I love. Are there any other games like this? Besides the ones from the same company. Any older games in this style??
A bunch of old "Fighting Fantasy" gamebooks have been faithfully adapted as videogames. Not all of them are quite as well done as the Sorcery ones, but I had a blast with Forest of Doom, for instance.

And on GOG, Space Rangers Quest seems to be of similar design. It's a scifi game of course, but, hey, so is Starship Traveller...

I don't know if it was the Temple+ mod or not, but I didn't have any glaring issues in the fire node (GTX1070 here). I was bracing myself for some real ugliness in performance but it just went fairly smoothly.

Tallima: That's exactly the right game. You beat up to go climb the mountains or you're coming out of them much worse off.it's not a great game and it has aged a lot, but I still thought it was fantastic and certainly there isn't anything quite like it.
Autocorrect strikes again?
I highly recommend Age of Decadence (HIGH multiple replay value too)

AND

UnderRail - also a solo character, but the best implementation of skill systems and skill synergy that I've seen in an RPG. Fun, deep and varied, meaningful, and really pays off to GET INTO your character. AoD also has these qualities to a high capacity, acutally!
You all talk about these great RPGs and now I want to play them all again.

Tin Man Games makes stuff like that, though probably not as good as Sorcery. To me, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (also a Steve Jackson classic) looks most interesting but I haven't played it.

There's also Joe Dever's Lone Wolf HD Remastered (I haven't played that either).

Regarding older games, has similar elements in part, I think, and so does [url=https://www.gog.com/game/king_of_dragon_pass]King of Dragon Pass, but I believe it's more of a strategy / management game than an RPG.

You're already interested in Realms of Arkania; IIRC those games have some minor Choose-Your-Own-Adventure parts, too, in addition to the first person dungeon and city exploration and the isometric turn-based combat. Btw, speaking of the latter two features, I see noone has mentioned Albion yet. It's not really what you're looking for in terms of player choice and roleplay, but it does have a nice setting and story and some arcade / (action-)adventure parts that are not about combat, and it's a great classic RPG that you might not have played (or heard of) yet, so maybe you'd like it anyway.

EDIT: Oh, and then there's Hand of Fate, also using CYOA elements, but it's more of a board game than an RPG, and Reigns which is more of a sim game.

Yes. My autographed masses me up all the time.

To add, you can get the TinManGames on Humble Store, they are DRM free. Have tried Appointment with F.E.A.R briefly and it is very much the book with some animations. Not bad if you can get them on sale - there are a few others there in the DRM free section like these too.
A party-based RPG generally relies heavily on combat, as safety in numbers is the entire point in having a group. If companions are going to each take turns to solve a problem while the rest just stand around, the group might as well be replaced by a single talented individual.

There are quite a few "choose your own adventure" games on Steam, like "an assassin in Orlandes". If you don't want to use Steam, I'll refer you to Choice of Games that has lots of games like this. Some of them, like Choice of the Dragon are free, and all of them have free demos, so you can easily check whether you like those games.
