here is what the game was about:

you were playing a knight in England
had a castle were you could plant crops and raise troops
could fight neighbors armies AND go first person against their castle troops
equipped your knight
fought in tournaments on foot
fought jousts
woo damsels
found a legendary set of weapons and armor
borrow money from the lender
at some point you fought a dragon

i remember playing to death at the time , but not the name

i played at the same time with warhammer shadow of the horned rat

Balance

Conqueror: A.D. 1086 had one major flaw. (Whether it was intentional or just a balance issue is anyone's guess.) One could literally traipse around England conquering all in your path with a huge, lumbering army without having to worry about securing your castles. Quite simply, if an enemy army came marching into one of your acquired territories, and so long as you had left behind a single knight to guard it from being overrun, the game would take you to its First-Person combat mode. As long as you were good enough to win in this mode, one could repel even the largest of armies from invading your lands.

Indeed I remember hand-to-hand combat was fairly easy (especially if you were equipped with a quality sword – such as king’s slayer). On the other hand – troops that were accompanying your attack were very weak and I remember running as crazy from one opponent to another just to kill as many of them as I can to save my knights and, in the same time, a certain number of soldiers in my army that were disappearing after my knight was dead. When I read what you wrote I think it would be smarter to attack a castle with just 1 man but I didn’t know that:-P

there is the exploit of fighting alone ! i only used a knight or two to draw their castle army away than took castles first person with equipment from jousts

never finished it though because of the horse jousting that wouldn't work on my pc at the time :)

the other suggestions come close as gameplay too, both the old defender and robin hood.

With Sierra (according to Bob Clardy), so unfortunately that could be a bit challenging.
