We introduce Hellish Quart!

A fighting game about sword dueling, in which the blades really clash using physics, and the characters use motion captured fencing techniques. Play as one of many 17th century warriors and use sabers, rapiers, broadswords and many other blades in single player campaign, arcade, or local multiplayer with friends.

Gameplay Teaser

Hellish Quart uses active ragdolls and all damage your blade can do is calculated with realtime physics. Four gamepad buttons represent 4 attack angles. Different button combinations give special attacks and combos. If you are not attacking, your character will automatically try to hold guard against your opponent's attacks. The blades really block each other and that's what's keeping you alive. To win, you must use proper timing, measure, technique, speed and wits - just like when fencing in the real world.

This makes make me happy. I am a fan of fighting games, and I have been waiting for a game in the vein of Bushido Blade. Also, thumbs up for intending to bring this to GOG, we hardly have any fighting games over here.
4 buttons for the 4 angles of attack. This game seems to be controller-oriented.

Nothing out of the ordinary to start off development (this is still pre-pre alpha after all) with something simple in regards to input methods/devices and go from there.

Keyboard + mouse surely will be an option no matter what.

Yes, there is more: long guards, evasion, combos... Actually more complex than, say, Mount and Blade: Warband. The thing is, that so many buttons and combinations seem to be begging for a controller, and less handy for the average mouse+keyboard, since the keyboard hand will be busy moving the character, and most mice do not feauture a large number of buttons. It is not bad that a PC game is best played with a controller, many PC games are.

In the end, this wlll be a fighting game. No shame in being best played with a controller, even if a keyboard was a viable option as well.

Now, if these mechanics could be combined with the horse mechanics and world of Mount and Blade, or [insert your favourite RPG game here]

I'm inclined to believe there will be keyboard support, not necessarily keyboard AND mouse. Fighting game control schemes mostly use buttons. Camera control, point-and-click inputs, and other functions associated with a mouse are atypical of the genre. Furthermore, the multiplayer support is only local at the moment.

The biggest difficulty with a keyboard is circular motions for inputting special moves, which are quite prevalent in 2D fighting games. However, I think that can be solved with simple tap inputs (like Mortal Kombat ).
