Been reading some news pieces and many movie theaters have shifted to renting out fro private events to make up for the current events and many of these rentals are used for gaming on the big screen.

I was just curious if anyone ever did this here?

- Have you done this with a console or PC?

- Was it for a party, event, or just a personal experience?

- Did you play classic DOS games on a big screen?

- What issues have you encountered?

Note: I'm not going to do this I was genuinely interested to see if there is a demand or it just depends on location/finances. Before in my area some have done this as a status symbol to say "Yes I have rented out an entire theatre."

I never have and probably never will. I have played games on a projector on a normal-ish house wall and I genuinely do not like it. The disconnect between you and the game is much wider for me anyway than gaming on a regular large screen and you need the room so dark to kinda see the image being projected on the wall. This was a very long time ago and I would imagine a theatre's quality would be beneficial but I see as probably being a one time kind of novelty.

No consoles. No DOS games.

Back in 2015, my brother and I rented out a theater to host a arcade party for family and friends. It was very affordable. We had 53 ppl in total.

We used 5 linux laptops stations with 32 inch screens and ppl brought their own gamepads and fight sticks. The only food we were allowed to bring in, though was pizza. Which worked out.

We played

* Kizuna Encounter
* Skullgirls (Main game on the large screen)
* The King of Fighters '98
* Fatal Fury Speical
* Tekken 3
* Puzzle Bobble 2

We had some mock prizes. The manager was very cool and let us stay 1 hour past our time limit at no charge. This was right before remodeling began so it was not a packed place for movies and such.

Prior to this I went to a local at a theater and it was excellent. It was hosted by WreckersFest NJ in NJ back in 2013.

No, the two movie theaters I lived nearest to were far too ratty for this.

I have toured a share of actual stage theaters, though.

Now if I had my pick, getting a whole D&B or Alamo DH would be amazing.

Surely the money is better spent on buying a large TV / monitor that you get to keep after the evening is finished?

This is, actually, pretty awesome. I've never heard of this before, but seems really interesting for parties, etc.
I don't even know if theaters around where I live would allow us to do that. But I will hold to that idea for future for sure.

I assume the main screen is not made for fast paced stuff, was there any noticeable lag or it was fast to respond?

We had no lag at all. Towards the end I ran a bunch of stuff like Xonotic and Solider of Fortune just to see how it would look and it was great.

Renting a cinema has one big problem: You are not allowed to throw any parties now and that includes private parties.

Ah, one useful thing: The cost of cleaning up the place after you may easily be double the charge for the renting.

Nop, never, sound like a really expensive thing, but if you are making a party and really like movies or play in a supper big screen it could be a good option. With my friends we bought a mini projector (nothing too fancy) and we build a portable cabinet controllers to play and compete in the backyard every time we meet, it's a really cheap option in long terms to play in a big screen!!!
