JKHSawyer: This is the type of game that, when done wrong, can very well damage the art form we all love and enjoy. Video games. I can only hope the developer knows what they're doing...
You mean like Ethnic Cleansing and Rapelay damaged games forever? C'mon, don't exaggerate, it's not being made by a big company and we certainly had worse than that (Rapelay). If it sucks it will be forgotten just like the others.

Thunderstone: These people picked a horrible time to announce their game. As much as I may applaud them for going against the grain and willingness to go into a dark area, but I think they should have held off longer before announcing it. On the other hand the shitstorm does not show signs of slowing down, I suppose the publicity from a marketting standpoint.
Well, it does show the protagonist killing women, so, yeah. They should have made female characters immortal (like the kids in the censored version of Fallout) so they don't suffer so much backlash from feminists. Killing female characters in games is a crime nowadays.

Kunovski: also (and I'm sorry if this is a total bullshit), I've read somewhere that the makers are polish nazis...
Thanks for the tip, but I don't think rumors should be thrown around, without linking to the original source. But I did a quick google and found this:

"Hatred" is a genocide simulator developed by Neo-Nazis

It looks like the rumor has a solid foundation. Follow the link and judge for yourself.

Hatred is a genocide sim, inspired by various school shootings and similar incidents in the US. This is of course worth debating from various perspectives.

But I think the fact that this is a genocide sim developed by a bunch of nazis is a much more important issue.

I didn't consider that the guy was killing a woman, I was thinking about the tastelessness of slaughtering of people in general.

I HAVE TO PLAY THIS GAME!!!
What the fuck is wrong with you? You think the game is distasteful? Fine. You think the people who want to play it, have no taste? Fine. But don't take any actions that could prevent it from coming to GOG. That is stepping over the line... It's just a game after all.

That's gross, monkey. Always be weary of those who want to tell you what is acceptable or not. They are usually the ones who are a bit unstable.

We need more games like this. Just as a middle-finger to all the hipster indies who think video games need to be some profound art-form tackling social issues, just games that are unashamedly games.

KasperHviid: "'Hipster"? Seriously, you are at a forum for vintage PC games. What can be more 'hipster' than that?

But about the game, it's death count will hardly be any different from any other action games. The only thing that make it stick out is that it doesn't try to justify the kills by making the victims appear as a threat to the player. So by abandoning the troopes and showing the slaugter for what it is, the game is actually more "profound art-form" than most other action games.
it's only "hipster" if you are here because you are into vintage PC games simply because they are vintage... If you are here for vintage PC games because you passionately love vintage PC games or grew up with them or both then it's not "hipster".
GOG has responded that the devs have not even approached them yet:

I would play it to see if a pacifist playthrough is possible. :D

Passive-aggressive hatred?

Anyway, the game doesn't really appeal to me; it's visually dull and I can't get past how cartoonishly evil the protagonist (antagonist?) sounds.

Which is the point; the game isn't celebrating mass murder, it's condemning it. It's showing how unbelievably grotesque such acts are. There is no fanfare, no happiness. Just death.
It's basically a horror game, except the player is the monster. I respect that.

In fact, it reminds me a lot of The Darkness 2; even the Murderer looks a lot like Jackie Estacado.
Much like Hatred, D2 had the theme of living as a (literal) monster. Except in D2 you were a demon-thing killing hostiles, whereas in this game you are a human killing innocents, which makes it all the more horrific.
It's quite fascinating, really. It's always nice to see a game explore such dark concepts.

Yeah, not wanting to have fun slaughtering innocent, helpless people is a clear sign of a mental disorder ;)

I don't think anyone would be slaughtering innocents because they had played this game.
