There is a new Deus Ex game being developed right now. The content of the game disgusts me so I don't want to see it being sold here at GOG. I could just ignore the game if GOG sells it but that is just too much effort from me. And I don't think it's fair when people can enjoy something I can't because I'm better than everyone else and the only person who matters in this universe But don't worry. It will be available for purchase at Uplay so it's not like you won't be able to play the game.

I don't care if this game comes to GOG or not. It's just a game that doesn't interest me.
If others want to buy and play it ... *shrugs* ... let them. More fun for them apparently and more money for GOG.

Wow, i'm speechless. Even for Anita that's fucking disgusting. She said many BS in the past, but this is by far the worst. I can't seriously understand why there are people who buy into the crap she keeps saying. I can't believe she's using that tragedy to push her political agenda.

Look, I've said it repeatedly. If games have (negative) effects, they are almost always just a piece in a puzzle if it comes to unravelling the effect of a certain outcome.

It's about proportionality - the more time you spend doing a certain activity, the more that activity can account for having effect on what you do. Therefore, if someone has a bad temper and starts heavily indulging in a certain activity that does not make the bad temper go away but aggravates its effect for the worse, we can conclude that the activity contributed noticeably to whatever that person eventually commits.

If that activity happens to be playing violent games, you cannot reasonably discount their effect, even if another activity could have led to the same result.

So whether it is a sheltered life, holding grudges, or having a bad temper, if you "feed" it with 40 hours of violent gameplay a week, the effect can hardly be overlooked.

But as I said, as with domestic violence, detailed background information (about how much time who spends playing games) is not readily available when something bad happens. That makes it a tricky issue.

Sure, you can get addicted to almost anything but speaking games, non-action games in particular have much higher threshold to substantially contribute to that kind of a problem. "
I agree that it's harder to get addicted to non action games. But the reason for that is non action games are not as fun as action games. :)
Haha. The real reason is two-fold. Typically, you don't spend nearly as much time playing non-violent non-action games, which is definitely a good thing in general. Plus, non-violent games do not provide as much power fantasy when you would decide between life and death in a trivialized way, which makes a huge difference as well.

A game like Hatred simply offers players, something different for those who don't find the content disgusting. Some people like variety. It gets boring playing as a Allied soldier during World War 2 or some army ranger going after terrorists or some survivor fighting against zombies 24/7. Who wants to eat the same food everyday? Same thing. Hatred offers us gamers a breath of fresh air while allowing us to express our hatred of political correctness.
In other words, nothing worth mentioning, really. Being able to take pleasure from yet another level of psychopathy does not really count as a positive thing to me.

I stopped playing violent games years ago with the exception of a single run through Spec Ops: the Line; that game was unique and profound in its message and its gameplay was engaging but not really fun.

Since then I discovered a lot of other different genres, a lot of good old games etc., and going back to spend hours running around, mindlessly shooting stuff seems to me like a complete waste of time and energy.
Now I enjoy real fun, not that juvenile power-and-thrill thing from years before. Try it, it does not hurt ;)

monkeydelarge: I agree with you. It's not healthy to bottle things up inside you and games like GTA IV help with it. Unfortunately, that game is insanely demanding so I've never been able to play it. I heard that the Saints Row games are really good for relieving stress.

JDelekto: I'll have to get some more specifics about that. When I was younger, I would go out into the woods and chop fallen trees into pieces in order to alleviate stress. Sitting behind a computer monitor, you don't have that Luxury. Games (like Gary's Mod) which are an open sandbox really help release stress.

That was actually pretty funny! Watching that trailer made me feel like there was some "Ren & Stimpy" behind some of that. (Maybe it was the old "log" commercial why blammo).

In all seriousness though, I really think that sandbox games which allow a person to get away with things they normally wouldn't do in real life (mind you, sandbox, not being a "human irritant" in multi-player games) is a good release of everyday stress.

It's not everyday you want to weld a bathtub to a rocket and shoot it off into the distance, but maybe you just want to see the physics involved.

Sure, sandboxes might work as stress relievers very well. But speaking of stress and violent games, I found it highly benefitial to track the causes of the stress and remove _them_ from my everyday life, rather than repeatedly run away from them to vent the stress out through virtual carnage. Turns out I realized the violent games themselves were one of the causes of stress for me (we already discussed lags, difficulty and mindlessness above) and I don't miss them one bit since I've abandoned them...
