Fairfox: anyhoohar has you evah met ne1 from online?
or wud you?
xperiences?
Met two great folks from Wisconsin in June. I've met them online in 2013, in a gaming forum, and our friendship has been growing strong ever since. We were aware that we had to get over the initial awkwardness BEFORE we met up "IRL", so we video chatted for a bit before finally meeting up in Bavaria. And it was great, certainly a high point of this year for me. We only had a little over 24 hours together, which in retrospect was not nearly enough. Y'know how it is... these folks have probably blown their vacation time for years, while I didn't even scratch the surface of my yearly paid vacation time with the trip (it included a national holiday as well, so, "socialism", right?).
It'll be a while until I can return the favor (won't set foot on the present US soil), but I definitely intend to one day. There's the English proverb that says "absence makes the heart grow fonder". The corresponding German proverb says: "Gone from the eyes, gone from the mind". But online is not "absent". People you only know "from online" feel more real after you've met them.
And if you're thinking of doing it, do it. Risk it. It may be disappointing, absolutely, and it WILL be awkward at first, but there could be great rewards. ♥
