Has anyone played Lost Eidolons?

I've read the reviews and watched some gameplay, but I'm still somewhat uncertain about the title. I enjoy turn-based tactical fantasy games, but there seem a limited number of creatures and no dungeon crawling aspects. Anyway...

... I'd really like to hear from someone who has played it... and gather your experience, positive or negative.

Have never played Fire Emblem. Usually I tend not to play anime-styled games (although I do play and enjoy a number of Japanese games... with Dragon's Dogma being my favorite game of all time). I grew up watching Starblazers and Space Battleship Yamato, but often can't get into games with that style... and especially have a hard time with Chibi style. So I'm intrigued by the rather realistic art style of Lost Eidolons... except for that hair! ha. ;)

Are there many creatures involved in the game? I've only seen a "horned lion" creature and a snake. I'm a sucker for any game with chimeras, griffins, dragons, etc.

I recommend emulating FE before buying this game. If you dislike FE gameplay, you might dislike this game.

Sadly, I only remember the horned lion, snake, and Hellhound. Creatures are usually really tough and need to be attacked in specific ways. When creatures show up, they will have two icons near them. The icons describe how to attack.

If you see a sword and bow. That means you should attack with a sword and bow for good damage. If you attack with weapons not in the icon, little harm will be done.

Lost Eidolons does have magic units that come with the usual turn base magic spells.

Yep, i played about halfway the story before i decided to wait and see if the developer would implement some extra features. I bought the game right after release, maybe even EA not sure anymore, and i noticed some update notes explaining about the want to add some extra features.

What i remember was that i actually enjoyed the way the story was brought. A more realistic variant of display of character conversations done in the text bar down under in many anime inspired games. It actually made me a bit nostaligic. Thinking back to the small fairs i visited as a kid which most of the time featured some kind of puppeteer show. Also the character realism was quite nicely done.

The story segments did come across as pretty slow in current day standards and i believe they developer aimed for adressing that bit. I'm not sure how it comes across these days.

For the game, you could descibe it as a three way part tactical adventure. With story, camp and battles being the three main ingredients. The game comes with a pretty okay tutorial and is in essence pretty basic. Characters can be upgraded, though all very static in nature. You have your protectors, attackers and some roles that are pretty much defined and do not offer a lot of variety in the rpg aspect of the character evolution. Still these are nice haves. Upgrades are performed when you have camp moments, together with some extra interactions which are voluntary.

All in all the game felt a bit like Blackguards.

I could certainly recommend the game discounted, all in all i had a general value idea of okay-ish without adding to much positives and negatives. I most certainly will return to the game once the time is there.

Symphony of War, Fantasy General 2, Disciples : Liberation, Star Renegades are other tactical minded titles that i would rate higher

WOW... I love Blackguards and Blackguards II! Thanks for the list. I'd been eyeing Symphony of War for the gameplay even though the art style isn't my favorite.

Interesting. I have both game's. Never felt like LE was anything like Blackguards. Not in gameplay or setting.

Yeah, that comparison just feels comletely off. As far as games on GOG go, Symphony of War and the Vestaria Saga games are its closest counterpart. One of these days I'll actually try Vestaria. For some reason I just haven't gotten around to it, which is really weird seeing as they are both from the original creator of the Fire Emblem games, one of my favorite game franchises.

hmmm, interesting. I would argue that if we leave out all the personal observation we could at least agree on the tactical nature of both games.... But that might also be me..

Perhaps you could elaborate a bit about why you think Lost Eidolons resembles Blackguards?

Because tactical turn-based RPG by itself is not enough (for me), since, for example, both Blackguards and XCOM belong to the genre, yet I loved the first and greatly disliked the second.

If you like Blackguards -- as I do -- you may want to check out Demon's Rise - Lords of Chaos, Demon's Rise - War for the Deep, and Shieldwall Chronicles Swords of the North by Wave Light Games. They were prepping a sequel to Shieldwall Chronicles, but I think the company went under; having been in contact with them over the years, I messaged them a few months back to no reply. Anyway, you may like their games... not as strong as Blackguards storywise... but fun tactical combat.

And yes, Wave Light Games claimed they submitted Shieldwall Chronicles to GOG but never heard back. ;(
