Happy Holidays from the GOG.com team!
The holiday season is here. The world, in all its little shopping frenzies and chaotic reunions, seems to slow down just a little. It slows to taste the crisp winter air, to be childishly entranced by all the lights and colors.

As for us, we're going to celebrate with a little something special.
With a new free game in our catalog: Bio Menace, something of a mix between the smooth and joyous gameplay of Commander Keen, and the alien weirdness of the original Duke Nukem platformers. The spacey 2D shooter by 3D Realms is now part of our selection of free, truly worth playing, classics.

With a Happy Holiday Sale from GOG.com & Bethesda:
Have a holly, jolly discount. It's the best time of the year. We don't know if there will be snow, but have a cup of deal. It's up to 75% off the entire Bethesda catalog on GOG.com - including the three and only classic Fallout games, as well as some of the best shooters in history: the retro Wolfenstein 3D & Return to Castle duo, The Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II & Final DOOM alongside the Quake series (from the singleplayer gory of Quake + Quake II, through the timeless mutliplayer mayhem of Quake III). Finally, there's the chance to explore the history of The Elder Scrolls with classics like Morrowind, Battlespire, and Redguard.

As always, any purchase from the Bethesda catalog on GOG.com comes with a free copy of The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall!

Looking for last-minute gifts? There ya' go.
The sale will last until December 29, 4:59 AM GMT.

Have a happy holiday season!
Thanks for the free game.
Thanks for Bio Menace !

Any chance to see entire 3drealms anthology here ?

& BTW - where is DOOM 3 ?! =)

djdarko: Also, strange I just recieved an email from GOG that says Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project and Balls of Steel are on sale, even though they are clearly still full price, and not part of any of the current sales.
Damn, I bought Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project some hours ago (at full price) just to make sure that I'll have it when it might leave GOG's catalogue next year. I knew I should've waited some more days.

Crackpot.756: I'm sure someone would have complained had they said "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays". I like complaining about people who complain about such things so either way is fine with me.

So. Would someone who finds Skyrim irritating and Oblivion boring be able to enjoy Morrowind? Hard to tell whether Morrowind praise is based on nostalgia more than anything.
Morrowind has a more distinct world than either Oblivion or Skyrim. Oblivion is basically just a generic medieval fantasy setting with stupid level scaling and drab dungeons, while Skyrim is basically just a viking setting with a neutered level up and skill system, along with a fixation on draugar ruins. Morrowind, on the other hand, imparts more of a conflicted setting between an indigenous civilization and an invading imperialistic one, while having a mix of various dungeons and caves which follow the lore of the place. Your skill choices actually have a significant impact on your ability to survive and use the innate and natural resources available to you. Morrowind has a more fantastical and alien setting overall, compared to the familiar European styled lands of Oblivion and Skyrim.

Morrowind doesn't look as refined as it once seemed, but that can be fixed with mods to make it have Oblivion level fidelity. Mods can also help balance out some of the skill system quirks, as well. (Taking athletics or acrobatics as major or minor makes you level up a bit too quickly, enchantment and alchemy eventually obsolete a pure mage character, Atronach star sign is almost always the best sign once you know what you're doing, etc) The main quest is not quite as interesting as some of the side quests (as is the case with every Elder Scrolls game), but the lore itself behind Morrowind's development, and some of the origins of the Empire and their motives, can all be found here in painstaking detail. Once again, mods only enhance what is available to you.

The base of Morrowind isn't bad, but it's very dated. Mods fix all of those problems and make a run through the game no lesser than a new Skyrim run.

So, which mods would you recommend? If I remember right, then Morrowind has the same weight problems like the other TES games, which means that looting is not easy in this game. Is there a mod to fix that?

InfraSuperman: It does have Soundblaster/Adlib support, with a pretty neat soundtrack.

Maxvorstadt: Do you still remember the Soundblaster variables? :-)
220,5,1 (or 220,7,1 for older Soundblasters). Is there anyone who doesn't remember them?
No latest news for Bio Menace in Galaxy, I'm getting only spinning circle..
Just a cosmetic touch, cos the game itself works like a charm : )
For anyone else wondering about the difference between the "Classic" labeled versions of Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics that show up for anyone who bought them previously when they were being sold by Interplay, and then the new Bethesda controlled rereleases on sale here.

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/rerelease_fallout_series_72e26/post121

"The only difference between the Classic editions and the Fallouts from Bethesda is that the Classic versions (as we've decided to call them) have more bonus goodies and support one additional platform - OS X. Other than that, those two editions should be identical. The main reason for this difference is that the approval process for the remaining bonus goodies takes a lot of time and we didn't want to hold up the release just because of that. ;)
To answer another question - will we ever have them included in the Bethesda versions? We will do everything in our power, of course, but I can't say for certain that we will."

Still, it might be a good idea to submit that to our Mantis :)
Thanks for the Holiday surprise!.

robertgg: please lay off the political correctness crap.

it's christmas so say merry christmas, not happy holiday.
Have a joyous suicide season!

Actually, as much as I detest the silly season, I grimace more when I hear "happy holidays" than "merry christmas"; at least use an actual greeting appropriate to your culture.

If someone wishes me merry christmas (or equivalent), even though they know my dislike, I know they intend well and thank them nonetheless. Or if I'm grumpy, I respond with "same to you and double it".

Tallima: Every year, someone in the forums complains that GOG doesn't say "Merry Christmas." I don't think their intention is to insult anyone, but merely to be inclusive.
I know what GOG wants to achieve, but such thinking is a mistake. They don't want to insult anyone and exclude anyone, but they are becoming meaningless and empty. They are dropping own culture, that shaped their identity and personality. It looks like they are ashamed of own traditions. If saying "Merry Christmas" to Mark would offend him, that means Mark could be offeded by absolutely anything. Even friendly smile could be offensive, because he can think that someone is making fun of his haircut. If someone would say to me "Happy Hanukkah" I would be really glad, because I know it's a time of joy, and feast and he/she wishes me all best! Saying "Merry Christmas" doesn't exclude anyone. That's the basic flaw of such logic, it's an utter nonsense. If Christmas tree doesn't offend people of other religions, than 'Merry Christmas' also won't.

Tallima: I don't think GOG is attempting to participate on a war against Christians or Christmas.
They don't want to choose sides, but they choose anyway, by being indifferent towards own tradition and common sense.

Tallima: They're likely enjoying the holiday seasons (New Years and Christmas are mostly celebrated in Poland, I'd imagine)
Christmas in Poland is like the greatest national holiday. We, the Poles, even atheists, celebrate Christmas almost like a wedding of dearest family member. Three days long wedding. On Christmas Eve (December 24th) we eat the most festive meal during the year - supper of Christmas Eve. It contains traditional, extremely tasty dishes, little different in certain regions of Poland. This very celebrated meal was shaped by many centuries of various tradtions, cultures and religions. Every custom, every belief enriched Polish culture. Roots of those symbols are sometimes very different: Slavic, Jew, German, Tatar, Lithuanian etc. For every Pole Christmas is a synonym of home, peace, comfort, hope, warm and joy. That's why I find incredibly sad, that my fellow countrymen wish 'Happy holidays', even when every tree, every decoration in the mall and on the street, every bird and every singer sings "It's Christmas!".

BTW - Merry Christmas! :D
