The NHS (UK National Health Service) is 70 today!

It isn't the first public health care system but it's definitely one of the older ones. Aneurin Bevan is literally a bloody hero and it's impossible to count the number of lives saved by the work he began.

NHS is a shit system, must be one of the worst health care systems in the developed world, doesn't look good at all for cancer survival rates (and much else) when compared to other health care systems.
It also wasn't created that early (Germany had a general health insurance system already back in the 1880s under Bismarck).
It's beyond pathetic that Brits derive patriotic pride from their horrible NHS and believe it's the envy of the rest of the world...the opening ceremony of the Olympic games in 2012 was an especially grotesque example of this. Just a very insular and ignorant perception. The reputation of the NHS in most of the developed world isn't good at all.
^Bloody hell.

Congrats, NHS, you've surely saved and improved a great many lives during the seventy years you've existed!

It's ok, let it all out. I knew this would inevitably attract some nastiness and I accepted that before posting.

EDIT: I feel like you've misinterpreted my intention. Nowhere did I say the NHS is the best, nor have I ever held that belief. What I'm saluting is the idea of having one and the people who made it happen.

It's no secret the NHS is struggling, successive governments have stripped its resources in an attempt to privatise it. So yes, it is shit. That doesn't mean it's not worth fighting for.

p.s. The Sickness Insurance Law was in no way a national healthcare system, it developed into one.

p.p.s. Freedom of speech != being a dick.

You get it. It's not a competition about who's the best - I'm just being thankful that we have it.

We'll be digging the grave of the NHS soon. It's being abused by too many foreigners who don't pay into the system. The idea of free health care needs to be abolished. It does not work very well in 2018.

No doubt you're also voting for the real cause of its demise - healthcare cuts. The idea that health tourism or immigrants are crippling the NHS is a ridiculous smokescreen for the systematic defunding and selling off of the NHS by people with vested interests in its failure. Immigrants on average pay more into the system than they get back.

? It's not an insurance-based system, so how could one even measure that?

National insurance contribution + tax - benefits = total

Tax and benefits have no intrinsic connection to the health care system.
"Immigrants" is also a meaningless category since it mixes highly disparate groups together. Some of them are probably a disproportionate burden on the healthcare system due to cultural practices like cousin marriage and their highly negative consequences, also low employment rates, especially for women.
But since I doubt that discussion is appropriate here, I'll end my involvement in this thread.
Stay safe - and don't get yourself killed by the NHS! It's better to die without a doctor assisting in your death.

I have to agree with morolf and darthspudius

NHS has become too incompetent and bureaucratic as a system. Too many foreigners are abusing this system and the bloated English government has no willingness or capacity to fix this broken system.

It simply boggles the mind, why people take pride in NHS.

doronnorod: English government
I wasn't aware there was such a thing.

(In case you don't follow, England doesn't have a government, the United Kingdom does, with devolved adminstrations in Scotland, Wales, and off and on in Northern Ireland. It's a bizarre feature of a half-wrought federalism. At any rate, your lack of awareness of that doesn't lend a great deal of credibility to your criticisms of the NHS. As for the government of the United Kingdom, as noted, it's actively attempting to dismantle the NHS in England via defunding and privatisation; it's fairing better in other constituent countries as health is a devolved issue.)

I want to say something clever and witty, but the thread is too depressing. We don't even have health care.

It is not for an ordinary person like you to decide what is credible or not. This is not a courtroom that makes judgments on people. Its just a forum where people can present facts or opinions.

The fact is that most people are rightfully angry at the poor services that NHS offers. The sooner this system is aborted, the better. Private health care is the inevitable and efficient future.

Sorry, maybe you didn't understand. I'll try to be clearer in future.

You're an American talking shit about an institution that you obviously know very little about. Your opinions on the matter are quite frankly meaningless, and the idea that you know what "most people" in the UK think about the NHS is laughable. Is that clear enough for you?
