Up to 90% off this bag full of tasty scares: Outlast, Clive Barker's Undying, Oxenfree, SOMA, Fran Bow, and more!

You are listening to a song that sounds like your grandma playing ping-pong with a gentleman stag. Suddenly, a distant noise of something breaking - or perhaps it's just the neighbor chopping down your favorite tree. But you live in the desert. It's all very confusing and disorienting until you check the calendar and realise it's almost Halloween! Time to put on your spooky face and go search the neighborhood for some scary good games going for up to 90% off. Time to go through The Scary Door.

Everyone you know is out here trick or treating, dressed up as something cool like the kids in Costume Quest. Be careful which houses you visit, though. Better avoid disturbing the disturbed Cat Lady downstairs, for starters. And that Last Door at the end of the road? It's strangely inviting, despite its ancient looks, but what are these eerie sounds coming from inside? Should you happen upon a wandering girl with a bag full of weird red candy, be so kind and help her find her cat. Poor Fran Bow has already been through enough.
This is one of these nights where your friends might try to drag you to some remote island with an abandoned military facility for some midnight mischief. If you want to feel Oxenfree for a while, feel free to join them, but better check if any of your buddies is possessed first, or you might end up stuck in a ghostly loop. Then again, you might not even make it there, not if you need to cross a Sunless Sea ruled by terrible Gods and odd creatures. Ah yes, this is definitely going to be a night to remember. Unless you decide to force some merciful Amnesia upon yourself, trying to dispel your Personal Nightmares. But why would you do that?

Enter The Scary Door and treat yourself to 30+ games that will give you the heebie-jeebies, including: SOMA, Clive Barker's Undying, Layers of Fear, Outlast, and so many others!
The promo will last until November 3, 3:59 AM UTC.
About time for a little Halloween promo -- Thanks GOG!

Breja: Well, that is a nice surprise after my (very) recent failure to get the Deadly Premonition from Humble Bundle to work. And just as I said yesterday that it's a bit too expensive to get on GOG it gets 90% off :D Ok then, I guess fate wants me to play it after all. I wasn't planning on buying anything right now, but this was just too much of a happy coincidence to pass up on.
I was thinking of your recent post, when I saw the discount on Deadly Premonition. At this price, anyone even remotely interested should pick up a copy. Just make sure to stick with it, despite the clunky controls or mediocre gameplay -- it's worth it for the story, and the truckload of bizarre ideas and scenes. It's also a must have for any fans of David Lynch and Twin Peaks.

IronArcturus: So is Amnesia: AMFP really that bad?
I haven't played it, but from what I read it took away a lot of tension from the original game. Most of the scares are carefully locked behind doors and don't lead to encounters (monster behind glass) AND to make it worse your lantern is both unlimited AND flickers when a monster is near.

So while in the first, you have this constant battle of when to use your light resources and when to risk darkness, with monsters possibly lurking around every corner - in the second you have a magic lamp that always tells you when a scare is inbound, and most times it won't even matter because it can't hurt you anyway. And you never have to worry about it running out so you can gleefully traipse across the entire linear game. Figure that out.

I think the story is meant to be decent. Now that I type this, I'm thinking maybe they turned it more into a walking simulator the second go around. So if you haven't played the first and the walking sim is your thing maybe you'll get more mileage out of it than most?

IronArcturus: So is Amnesia: AMFP really that bad?
Depends on your definition of "that bad". Frankly, I'm not a huge fan of either of the Amnesia games. I'd rather recommend SOMA, if you haven't tried it.

IronArcturus: So is Amnesia: AMFP really that bad?
Yes, I could barely motivate myself to finish it.
Didn't anyway due to gamebreaking bugs both times I tried.

Splatsch: So in short, a game worth to play, but with a lot of issues due to it being a very bad port...
In few words, what is good for you both ? What kind of atmosphere and humor is there ?
(thanks for the help by the way :))
The main character is a delight, seeing visions in his coffee, the woman whose hotel you stay at sitting at the other end of a very long table shouting, loud (awesome) music during cutscenes. The character talking to an imaginary character discussing old movies during car rides and many other things.

Unfortunately I might have spoken too soon about fate wanting me to play the game after all, as I've got the same problem as I did then. The only difference is that the GOG version plays the intro and then crashes :P

Fuck this, I seriously can't waste my time trying all the possible fixes all over again.

Except that was more of an annoyance, rather than actually scary. Same problem with the camera in Outlast, and its batteries which last for about a minute. And for that matter, why can the crazies still see you, while you can't see shit without the night-vision. FFFFF.

It's a common trend I've noticed in Horror games, that the features intended to scare the player frequently turn out to be annoying rather than frightening.

Edit: By the way, games as old as Silent Hill 1 already handled this better. Your radio and flashlight had unlimited battery power, but it was actually a good idea to turn them off in some situations, since they attracted creatures. It works the same way in Evil Within, for a more recent example. Much better than this artificial and unrealistic limitation of supplies. ( Seriously, that camera battery in Outlast should have enough power to last the whole game. )

Must be some incompatibility on your end then, I guess. Your hardware meets the requirements, and you have all the required software installed? Maybe check the GOG forum for the game, to see if it's a common problem.

Yeah, it meets everything it should easily. By all accounts it should run. The GOG subforum is pretty barren. The problem itself is quite common, there's a list of various fixes longer than my arm :D

Right now I'll try to install it on a second computer, see if it works there.

I remember it gave me the occasional crash as well, but only after playing for an hour or so, not right at start-up. Does it give you an error message, or some other clue to help figure out the source of the problem?

park_84: Well, this looks more to a regular weekend promo than to the somewhat bigger sale I was expecting for Halloween. Not sure why I was expecting that, though.
33 titles is bigger than the average weekend sale.

Had the same problem and I was able to fix it by setting Windows Media Player as the default video player.

That's too bad. I was hoping for a decent sequel to Amnesia. Did the game devs ever mention making a third game?

"dp.exe has stopped working" is all she wrote.

Man, I almost forgot what it's like having problems like that with getting a game to work :D There was a time when something like that was far more common, but now it's been quite a few years, I don't even remember what the last game was with problems like this. Probably Fallout 3.
Nothing for me in this promo, not into to horror.

A few non horror/minimal horror games in this sale.
