To me, John Carpenter is highly over-rated, I find some of his movies to be very very good, and some to be very very bad.

The bad list from what I've seen:

Halloween
Christine
Prince of Darkness
Vampires
Ghosts of Mars (which I never even finished I just turned off because it was so stupid.)

Good list from what I'vse seen:

Elvis (was SOOO surprised how great this was, I don't like Elvis or really know much about him, well, after this movie I did!)
Escape from New York
The Thing
StarMan
Big Trouble in Little China
In the Mouth of Madness
Village of the Damned
Escape from L.A.

I know, I still have a few crucial of his to watch: Assault on Precinct 13, Dark Star, The Fog, and They Live

bykowsky: EDIT: Any horror movies recommendations?
Every year I go ballistic with Horror movies. I have a fairly big collection.

A few I always watch :
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 - Still one of the best horror movies ever)
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 - Pretty good remake)
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre : The Beginning
- Phantasm series (classic!)
- Wolf Creek
- Dagon (HP Lovecraft done right)
- Dreams in the Witchhouse (Great "Masters of Horror" episode directed by Stuart Gorden who also did "Dagon")
- The Whisperer in Darkness (More Lovecraft done right, with an intentionally classic look)
- The Thing (1982)
- Graveyard Shift (Generally not considered Stephen King's best, but I think it's a solid monster movie)
- [REC] (Great one! Better than the US remake "Quarantine")
- Ninth Gate (cerebral thriller with horror elements)
- Rose Red (Haunted house Stephen King mini-series)
- Ghost Ship (Not scary, but cool plot and traditional effects)

More fun ones that have horror, but are not really attempting to be scary :
- Return of the Living Dead (awesome zombie movie where every attempt to solve the problem makes things worse)
- Night of the Creeps (Iron Maiden's mascot "Eddie" came from a certain scene in this movie)
- The Frighteners
- The Lost Boys (Classic vampire flick from the 80's)
- Army of Darkness (Some of the most memorable lines ever!)
- Evil Dead 2 (Slapstick horror)

And you really can't go wrong watching The Addams Family or The Munsters.

drealmer7: StarMan
You enjoyed that?! - been a long time since I saw it and I didnt like it - could you elaborate (without spoilers) as to what "got you" with it?

drealmer7: Village of the Damned
Uh, you do mean the terrible remake don't you?! - Give the original a shot instead!

(note, did enjoy the remake - just use the word "terrible" in comparison to the original)

Breja: Apparently you have some very rare Director's (after he regained his senses and remade the whole movie) Cut. Might be valuable.
Nope, just the one everybody else enjoyed! ;)

I sense a merchandising and greeting card franchise opportunity in Hungary!

bevinator: For me, my favorite part of Halloween is dressing up in costume and staying home... to scare the literal crap out of people when they come for candy. IT IS SO GLORIOUS.
You're doing an essential service sir.

One of the best examples of this I ever saw as a kid was this guy dressed up as a scarecrow on a porch sitting on a chair perpendicular to the door. He looked completely fake. Then you go to ring the doorbell and he'd stand up and scream at you. Scared us silly! It was great.

Sachys: You enjoyed that?!
Yeah, I've been watching Starman since it came out, I was a little kid. loved it then, still like it now (not that I think it is great or anything.) "Green means go. Red means stop. Yellow means go very fast!"
It is a very humanist movie too, and I like that. The story is very good, could have been done way better, just as most movies.

I actually enjoy the remake quite a bit, surprisingly, as, I usually hate remakes. I know the originals too, very good.

AH! Never did see it as a kid and always figured I'd missed the whole "sense of wonder" feeling as a result. Maybe if I become a father at some point I'll revisit!

Ric1987: Check out The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury
Thanks for the suggestion. I investigated and bought it.
How about listening to scary music?

Like, say, "A Night on Bald Mountain", by Mossorgsky.

Or how about "Danse Macabre", by Camille Saint-Saëns?

tinyE: Terraria marathon, with their cool Halloween extras. :D
Thanks for the remainder! Just don't know where will put all the stuff I get :D

WOW! Nice list, man! I didn't know that there are good Lovecraftian movies out there. I've only watched The Call of Cthulhu and it was great.
[REC] in my book is the best modern zombie movie of all time and The Addams Family movie is my favourite comedy :D

In my country Halloween is a big thing only on commercial level. There are costumes in shops, marathons in cinemas and events in clubs, but after all we got our own Dziady and more catholic - Zaduszki, so nobody really cares like in USA or Ireland.
But basically we (slavic people) invented vampires so it's alway a good time to watch some spooky movies.
The drawbridge will be raised and any brat attempting to beg (or as it is called, 'Trick or Treat')
will have the HellHounds set upon them.
Another excuse for companies to attempt to bleed us dry with a lame, commercial rape of a traditional festival.

Bah Humbug!!!

If by "everybody" you mean 21% of the critics and 24 % of the audience, going by Rotten Tomatoes. Mind you, I'm not saying those ratings should be used to judge whether a movie is good or bad, but saying that "everybody else enjoyed it"? Yeah, no, not even close. For once I'm not in the minority here.

You want some good Lovecraftian stuff see In the Mouth of Madness, it's a damn masterpiece. And the Re-Animator, though it's a very different beast, more of a horror comedy.

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I was a kid, too. I did it one year for Halloween and it was pretty successful. I have to say, though, my best work was as an evil clown. Of all the themes we've used over the years, the clowns seemed to be the one that got people the most riled.
