Seeing a lot of threads from memebers, whose accounts had been hacked, I started to feel a bit uneasy. Therefore, I began to wonder, what could I do to prevent something like this happening to me.

I do not use Galaxy (some members suggested that this could play a role), I always logout when I leave the site/store and I do not use the same password on other game-related sites.

Any other precautions I could do to minimise the probability? Thanks a lot in advance.
Wear a tinfoil hat.
Use complex password and common sense.

I've never had any single account hacked ever since I touched internet sixteen years ago.

* Use a password generator to get longer+complicated passwords.
Keepass has been mentioned more than once in these threads.

* Don't use public WiFi networks to connect to important sites.

or keep it simple and stupid.
People usually overlook stupid and simple things.

Use randomly generated complex passwords, and never use the same password in more than one place.

i have been looking into these hacked accounts threads and they seem to be mostly targeting accounts having witcher 3 or new members who joined here due to witcher 3 purchase . So wonder if these players are doing something that gets their account hacked like click on shady link that lies about being something witcher 3 related ....

That's pretty much what it looks like. I haven't seen any long-time members who do or don't own TW3 mentioning this happening to them.

In my two decades of internet use I've never had one of my accounts be compromised, and I'm not particularly clever about choosing passwords either, but I am attentive to what I install on my PCs. I think there's more to it than just someone being able to guess those people's passwords; unless they're really that obvious. I'm not particularly worried.

Well I thought I would never get hacked, and I know I use different passwords for the sites I use. So I'm pretty sure it's not because I use the same password for everything, but I do have Witcher 3 and used GOG Galaxy. I usually log onto these type of accounts on my own computer and laptop, but I may have made a boo boo somewhere.
GOG needs to implement its own "Steam Guard" and encourage customers to utilize two-step authentication on their personal email accounts (everyone should be using 2-step authentication on their email accounts anyway). For now GoG has lost my trust and I will not be buying any further games from them until I know my account can't be taken over by simply changing the email address without any kind of preventive notification. Get it done GoG and make returning personal accounts to hijacked users your top priority, or continue to lose customer trust and confidence!

Peace -

Can it be somehow related to The Witcher 3 gift code/coupon for 3rd part websites (e.g. nVidia). I found my nVidia software was completely screwed by some malware once.

That's where I got mine, but it seems unlikely because I think some people don't even have witcher 3 and got their account hacked. Maybe they're not related but we'll never know.
the best prevention you can do is: don't masturbate after midnight!
