It is NOT a Star Wars game (but your "atmosphere" isn't far off). It DOES have space flight sim aspects. It isn't on GoG (should be! ;)) but IS DRM free. I feel like I'm giving a bad riddle here :)

It's not Red Shirt.

It's a 3rd person shooter, but also has flight sim segments (the player is free to jump into their fighter at any time). There's also some base management and when a certain rank is reached, I can assign attacks and build defenses...

It's NOT an MMO or MOO / Star Control type game. Maybe a poor man's Mass Effect, but with fewer RPG aspects? PC only (as far as I know). I'll probably reveal it later today if no one gets it. Didn't want to break out a stumper!

Could you tell more about the protagonist? Male/female, human/alien, those sort of things. Do you get to choose what the protagonist will look like or is it pre-set?

Protagonist is pre-set, depending on your faction choice. You heard about the Drones, but you can also pick a human faction, an all female MUTATED human faction that looks suspiciously like a Twi'leck and a fourth faction of odd android (I think?) pranksters that were infused with human DNA. No, I don't know how you infuse DNA into a robot. Not really sure I want to ;)

The game was... Salvation Prophecy! I guess a bit too obscure :(
