(I am really stuck at that spot right now, but since there is no water or swamp or frog anywhere I don't think one will appear) :D
It sounded a bit like Discworld and Unseen University's gate but there should be a frog somewhere there so no frog, no Discworld ;)

You can't argue with a revelation ;P

OK, next one: my people are freezing to death. But why, oh why?! I did check the heating pattern on a map and I see that every corner of my facility should be properly heated. So I increase the heating, man, those heating bills will kill me... wait a second, wtf?! It didn't help at all! And then I learn that even though on the map you see a spherical influence of each radiator it's completely misleading because every wall limits the heat transfer. Terrible UI! But the game is great nonetheless.

This is about the only game on my wishlist I don't have elsewhere (anymore). I'll describe one of the starting missions again.

"This placed used to be inhabited by my people, but they have been driven out, scattered and now only a few survivors remain. It pains me to see all the destruction, our cities burned, the land barren, horrible creatures roaming everywhere. It is time we reclaimed what once was ours and I shall lead my men to victory!"

How about HoMM 3? The Restoration of Erathia starts more or less like that

I have to admit, I picked the wording exactly so that it would sound like more than one game (HoMM3 being one of those).
No, it's not it though.

Edit: And the cities were burnt more or less literally.
