ZFR: It's not a chess simulator or anything similar. Just a normal fairly known game, where one of the battles is a chess arena.
American McGee's Alice or Alice: Madness Returns?
It's been a while since I played them, but I think one of them (or both?!) have a level like that.

Yeeey, I finally nailed one! :D

Here it goes:
Whoa! I'm surrounded by enemies. Only my "Dark Cloaks" are here to protect me. But one group of my enemies also have a cloak, one that makes them invisible. I better take care of them first. After all, despite their shady cloaks they are the least advanced of all my enemies.
