Still no idea... I feel I should know this..

Ghorpm: And once again: in standard RTS game you don't have well defined branching paths to choose, you can move (almost) wherever you wish.
In Warcraft III there was a level with precisely that: literally two paths and you had to choose one of them (one was a direct assault, and another indirect one). The game even made you click on the path you choose, so the other one was closed for you. Hence this was my first guess.

OK, but in this game you get to choose branching paths ALL THE TIME, note just once. I gave you somewhat prominent example of what it may mean (facing different enemies) but it's one of the most basic mechanics of this game. If nobody gets it until evening (my time obviously) I'll give a huge hint.

FoxySage: FTL?
In most cases you don't know what you will find next. In my game - yes you do :)

And please remember the abilities that the main character has and I've already mentioned: repair, decoy, smokescreen, airstrike. Doesn't it ring a bell?

Was just a shot in the dark (and i had completely forgot about the other abilities when i posted the guess >.>).

It sounds vaguely familliar, but i got no clue what it is.
I came out of my lurking just to say that it's Anomaly Warzone Earth.
Anomaly Warzone Earth

EDIT: Ninjad...

If it is, you can have my turn, I don't think I have time to think and write an interesting one and look at the thread periodically for answers.

YES! FINALLY :D

So it's your turn because Elaborigen wanted it this way :)

Was it really so obscure? I honestly thought it would be easy but apparently a favorite game of one person is another's obscure game. Or I described it poorly. Or both ;)

I'll admit I've never even heard of that game before, let alone play it (Just googled for the hints you gave). Sounds interesting though...

For my question I'll go with the format of the thread that was the inspiration for this. You're stuck and need help.

So here goes. I'll start with a classic:

HELP!! I'm on the level where you have to get to the submarine, but I can't find the passage hidden behind a poster.

I don't play much RTS games (I used to play some and now none), so maybe that's why? I play a handful only, like five max.

A submarine with a poster? Is it by any chance Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis? I haven't played it yet but I do know there's a submarine involved.

No.

It's a classic of its genre. Sold on GOG. Going to sleep now. I'll give more hints tomorrow morning if no solutions appear.
I thought this would be very easy... I think all of my friends played this game and would recongnize the level straight away back when it appeared.

Even non-gamers would recognize the title as that of a video game.

Additional hint:

At the beginning of the level I was imprisoned and tortured by... police? They said they'll fry my ass.

As much as I rarely play FPS I think it's Duke Nukem 3D

Yes. Ironically I only played the game fully few years ago, but as I said, all my friends played it back then so I knew all about the submarine level.
