Heading for the finish line – 80% off.

Haven't gotten behind the wheel of this legendary racer just yet? Be speedy – because Race Driver: GRID will be leaving our catalog on December 31, 2016.

Considered one of the most timeless, refined moderns racers – we're sad to see it go, but you can still grab the game now at 80% off, all the way up until December 31, 10:59 PM UTC.

Vrrrrooom, vrrrrooom.

A brief trip down memory lane, this is how GRID was first introduced to GOG.com:
Rrrrrrrnnnn! EEEEEEERRrrrrnNNNNNN!

Vrrrrooom! If you like fast cars, tight turns, and pulse-pounding races, then today's release is sure to please: Race Driver: GRID--known in the US simply as GRiD--screeches over the finish line!

In GRID, you're a driver with dreams of going big: you start out driving in others' cars for money, but soon enough you'll start your own team, picking the races you want to compete in, buying the cars and equipment that you need to get the advantage over the other drivers, and traveling the world to compete. With 43 cars and 3 different regions to compete in--the US, Europe, and Japan--there's plenty to captivate adrenaline junkies. But that's not all: GRID also features an innovative "flashback" system, whereby you can rewind time a few crucial seconds to fix any sloppy driving or mistakes, avoid crashes, and generally gain the needed edge to win. With open wheel racing, demolition derbies, GT racing, there's plenty of variety in gameplay.

Real road courses such as Le Mans are in the game, as well as street circuits such as such as the Detroit and Washington D.C.. There are also a number of fictional tracks, such as street courses in San Francisco, and Milan, and Mount Haruna.

Is that enough to get your pulse pounding? Check out Race Driver: GRID
This is a great racing game. It is an arcade racer with a realistic feel to it. It isn't a simulation as you won't be doing any tweaking and the races are not set up like real world races, but you have to drive with realism in mind. No accelerating into corners, bouncing off of your opponents and stuff like that. The presentation is super slick and catchy and the races typically last just long enough to avoid becoming a slog. Expect high speeds, narrow track widths and impossible light conditions during street races. Seriously, driving through narrow San Francisco streets is truly a challange as you are constantly blinded by alternating sunlight and murky shadows with an extreme amount of visual clutter all around you.

I do not believe for one second that this game is being pulled over "car licenses" or any other game content reason. That makes no sense, there is no way the developers included these cars under the stipulation that they must cease selling the game after X amount of years. That could only happen if they were to remake the game and launch it as a new product, then old licences for recreated cars, brands and music etc would no longer apply. Irrelevant, such a scenario would not impact the right to sell the original game.

This is certainly a publisher decision. Maybe they want to consolidate their online sales to Steam, as many publishers/distributors are known to do. Did the IP change hands recently perhaps?

EDIT: This game plays really well with an Xbox controller!

armedready: This game was free from humble bundle so I wonder if it'll get removed from steam as well.
More than likely, yes.

Something very dodgy about "car licences" if that's the reason, but meh.

As for GRID, it was free recently to anyone via Humblebundle, plus it's even cheaper on steam than it is here now (where you're more likely to get proper patches (should there be any in the future).

P.S. GRID is like ice skating, but in a car. I know some liked it, but I thought it was one of the worst displays of "car handling" in any game I've ever played, but to each their own.

It really depends on the agreement. Many licenses are for a limited time or X amount of years and since it's easy to pull digital items from shelves, this could well be the case: the license expired and no new agreement was reached. Therefore, they have to stop selling it until such time as the license is renewed.

As if a AAA publisher would ever officially patch a game this old, especially if it has to be completely pulled from sale and no money can be made with it anymore (nor can it be given away for free for promotional purposes). If anything GOG is MORE likely to patch the game in the future should compatibility issues arise due to Windows updates or driver issues etc..

GOG cannot stop this game from being removed. But everyone who loves PC heritage and PC games should support what GOG is trying to do when bringing back the classics and releasing games from the shackles of DRM and trying to preserve PC gaming!. When we buy a game here we can keep it Forever :)

The games industry is going to regret all this in the future as hollywood has. The movie industry has lost so much of the early days of the film legacy because they didn't care about preserving it in the early days. They can never get it back now no matter how much they wish.

The gaming industry has been around 50 years and they still don't care about preserving it! :(

Theres a great interview GOG did a few years ago everybody should read :-

Being GOG: preserving a medium that doesn't want to be preserved

sad to see another one going under but seeing as I absolutely despise this kind of games I'll pass this otherwise nice offer
thanks for letting everybody know know this in advance so each can act accordingly

bernstein82: @everyone: licensing is the reason why there are nearly zero racing & sport games on gog. today even more so than ten years ago...

as such, unless licensees change their mind, it's highly unlikely gog will ever get a collection of these games... they come & go (like colin mcrae rally, toca, ...)
But there are many - mostly arcade - racing games without licensed cars, yet almost none of these are here on GOG (except the Flatout series and some others).

Here is just a short list, that I remember could/should be more or less in GOG's catalog :
- Xpand Rally series
- Redline Racer
- Ignite
- Insane 2
- Big Red Racing
- Split/Second: Velocity
- Ignition (a great top-down view racing game from the 90s)
- Highway Hunter
- Quarantine series (FPS with a Taxi Cab)
- Zone Raiders
- Re-Volt
- Rollcage series
- Hi-Octane
- Mad Driver
- Nail'D
- Zombie Driver HD
- Lego Racers series
- Skunny Kart
- Carmageddon TDR 2000 or any of the never incarnations
- Lego Stunt Rally
- Crazy Taxi series (does this have licensed cars?)
- Crashday
- Mad Tracks (2006)
- Pac-Man World Rally
- Crash Time (Alarm für Cobra 11) series
- Pure

... and many more.

deja65: Actually, licenced car games are completely fine.Publishers just need to get their games here sooner ;),because most of the racing games here have a tendency to leave a year after release *cough*Colin McRae Rally 2005*weezy*.
I wish Codemasters would bring the Dirt franchise here,or at least Dirt 3.Dirt Rally would be king, but i highly doubt that this is gonna happen in our life cycles :D.Cheers

IronArcturus: I was hoping to eventually see Fuel on GOG. But now that Grid is gone that seems very unlikely. :-/
Oohh FUEL... A really unique game which i enjoyed immensely. As far as i remember it was removed from Steam a long time ago, and i got lucky with a guy who had a spare cd key ;).There is just a tiny chance that this might hit GOG, but who knows.Cheers
Well, I guess that doesn't bode well for a DRM-free release of Dirt 3.

Oh well. GRID is an awesome game, and totally worth buying before it disappears. Don't blow your chance here, people.

OPstrator: - Re-Volt
Hoo boy. This was removed from GOG mere months after its release, thanks to a dispute between the publisher and the game's fan community.

Especially license-heavy games and iterative franchises like sports and racing games tend to have a short shelf life and make the vast majority of sales during a very brief period upon release so there's no reason why a publisher would not agree to a timed deal. Not to mention that if a game's or even entire franchise's premise is based on licenses publishers / developers are in a MUCH worse position to make demands concerning the deal than the rights owners (who also tend to be businesses worth much more than game publishers / developers and don't depend on the games based on their property).

And expiring licensing deals have caused dozens of games to disappear from sale. was pulled from sale because some military equipment license(s) expired. And probably most famously the re-release of [url=http://www.cinemablend.com/games/GTA-Vice-City-Back-Steam-Nearly-10-Songs-Removed-50206.html]Vice City is missing ten songs from the original game and the same songs were removed via a patch from the Steam version also for people who had already bought the game before the licenses had expired.

Fuel really was a gem of a game. I think it may be the only exploration racer out there. You could literally drive around for hours on the gigantic map! I've only played the console version but have been waiting forever for a DRM-free PC version to be released. I guess one can always dream. :P

Re-Volt was on GOG. But the company who bought the rights to the series did so mainly to revive it on Android and was too lazy to properly fix the PC game for newer systems. So they simply used a community patch without asking the authors. They were furious that a company who had nothing to do with the game and just picked up the rights for cheap made money with their work and made some unreasonable demands to the right holder if they want to continue using the community patch. The right holder decided it was not worth the bother and pulled the PC version from sale.

The game is not available anywhere digitally at the moment, at least to my knowledge.

I tried replaying Re-Volt last week and I really don't think we need to shed any tears over it's removal. :P That damn thing is so rigged against the player even on easy.
