I have a laptop that I want to play some older games on (EX: Doom 3, Fallout etc). I have tried some older games and they run good enough if I turn some settings down. I need games that have good xbox one controller support (Xinput). coming from consoles I don't like kb/m (sorry) especially on a laptop. How do I know which ones REALLY support a controller well? I know there is a tick box that says "controller support" and I use that. The issue is that "support" seems a bit general. For example I bought Morrowind as it claimed controller support but in actuality it really doesn't support a controller. If I enable joystick that is all I get is the joystick working, none of the other buttons nor the analogs work I still need to use the mouse and keyboard as well as the controller, that is too awkward.

So how do I know which games support a controller to the point where you can use it for all gaming functions, as if I were playing on a console?

Just play on a console then?

For those games mentioned, I would highly recommend k+m as they are all first person, and aiming is key. Twiddly sticks just don’t match up. That’s not saying controllers don’t have a place, fighting or driving games are best played on those. Use what is best for the task. I use a combination of controller and mouse for GTA for instance.

As for telling wether a game supports Xbox controller try:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Home

They have lots of information on games.

Just play on a console? How do I lug a console plus TV around as easy as a laptop? Solve that and then you have a point.

Those games I mentioned were also on console and were designed for a controller too. I don't remember anyone saying they were not playable. Moving around by typing WASD is just awkward for me. You like that fine. Having all controls in one unit detached from the laptop such as a controller are more comfortable to me. Yes if playing online shooters KB/M is best but I won't be playing those.

Thanks.

Search GPD Win 2. It’s an example of a portable computer with built in controller. There are others, I am eyeing up the RG350 handheld for emulated games as an alternative to laptop.
A laptop will be relatively heavy anyways if your moving about, especially a gaming laptop. Non gaming ones might run things, at lower specs. But there might be issues, some have been found with onboard graphics cards like intel. I have an acre predator Helios laptop, great at running things but I wouldn’t say it’s portable as such. Then you would have the controller and cable or batteries.
But each to their own, and there are options as I say. Check out that link I posted, it’s probably the best source of information in games.

You should check https://www.pcgamingwiki.com . Then search the game that you are interested and if you scroll down you will find if the game supports controllers.

EDIT: I didn't know that nightcraw1er had already mentioned pcgamingwiki. But anyways that is the only way to check if a game supports controllers

You could look into using a gamepad key mapper where you remap keys and mouse to the controller. I have used AntiMicro for this in the past, worked great. You can find it on GitHub https://github.com/AntiMicro/antimicro
