No, I was talking about Dragon age: Origins. Granted, I only played the noble origin story and part of the following area (Ostagar?)...but it seemed dumbed down to me. Few classes, too many items right from the start, combat that didn't appeal to me and seemed MMORPG-like...and googling indicates that a lot of people have similar impressions.

Well, I am not sure what to say. Da: o is as near to baldurs gate - one of the all time best rpg',s as anyone has ever got. True the classes aren't as vast, and the npcs can leave something to be desired, but combat is the same round based pausable mechanism, same area based exploration on a big map. Story is not as epic, focusing more on smaller betrayals and revenge. But definitely no mmo like features, is grinding "kill chicken" quests, or go to x and get y then return to x for chicken killer knife +1, then repeat over and over, whilst some 8 year shouts yeewessaa in your ear type mmo crap.

Oh, the origin stories themselves are a bit predictable, I tend to play dwarf, particularly because of the money aspect, and I also tend to try to play solo (goes for all games).

I greatly enjoyed Baldur's Gate 2 back in 2000/2001...but tbh in retrospect it leaves a lot to be desired in some ways, there are many quests where you don't have choices you should have so genuine role-playing is rather constricted in parts. The game is also too biased against playing evil which is much harder than being a do-gooder.
I did like BG2's combat though, but Dragon Age felt rather different...bland encounters, and I found it annoying that you were supposed to rely on those stupid AI scripts for your companions (I want to micromanage it all...but Dragon Age seemed to discourage that).
Maybe I should give it another try one day, but first impressions weren't favorable.

Ok, let's try it the other way, what do you consider a good rpg. Maybe I can find some common ground to sell it to you :o)

Personally, I disliked Deep Roads in Origins so much that I wished there was a 'Skip the Deep Roads' mod available, so if it's DAO you're playing hopefully they'll be more fun to you.

Origins, but not really full on playing it, just messing around. I want to finish a few other games I'm almost done with before I go into it full bore.
