Cavalary: On a potentially better note, was that announcement JMich hinted at posted anywhere by now?
avatar
JMich: You mean about Disney games losing regional pricing being intentional? See here.
Oh, thanks. Since you posted that here, didn't think to check the rest of the forum, as in outside favorited threads and the occasional news post, rarely do that if not looking for something in particular.

That's... a lot of stuff to read about it, but 1/3 through the thread by the time I'm writing this, taking a break now.
As you can imagine, no less furious about the regional pricing move, no matter how "complicated". And NDAs are wrong in principle too, also no question. Other than that... interesting, and some (actual) good news. But of too little relevance, considering...

Cavalary: Damn Kalypso... :/
You mean that base price +33%. Really, I don't get it. I understand both regional pricing and flat price policy, but this kind of regional pricing is against logic IMO. I'd really like someone to explain it to me :(

$39.99 = €44.99 for them apparently. Guess they had a little problem understanding what was meant by $1 is not €1...
I still don't understand how it works. Asked Kalypso for their pricing scheme and received the following answer:

Thank you for your inquiry. We kindly ask you to contact GOG for further information on their pricing.

Last time I've asked Conatus Creative (showing how strange are their price levels), they told me that:

We weren't aware of this issue. The reality is these prices are automated on GOG's system. I will contact their support right now and see if I can get a response from them.

So - who creates these regional pricing levels?

From what I see above, there must be some correlation between EURUSD exchange rate, because prices for Poland skyrocket in comparison with Anglo-Saxon regions. Is that the reason?

there is a lonely GOGbear locked away in a dark room beneath GOG HQ tasked with repeatedly rolling a dice ...
:p

seriously though, my initial suggestion would be that you simply met a clueless support staff at Kalypso, who wanted to get rid of you by pointing you elsewhere.

but given that GOG's response is merely: "it's complicated" ... who knows, maybe this is all GOGs fault ...

EU/USD exchange certainly plays a role.
usually the euro price is converted 1:1 from the dollar price by the publisher (or GOG ?).
ie. a game that costs 39$ is offered at 39€
since the EUUSD rate is actually not 1:1, these 39€ are in reality worth ~47$, thus making the game more expensive in Europe. Depending on how the EU/USD exchange rate changes over time that price difference will get lower or higher.

With the current rate you pay ~18% more in Euro.
So whenever you see these +18% prices in the price postings, that means the publisher just converted the Dollar price 1:1 to euro.

however as Cavalary pointed out, Kalypso went even beyond that and set the Euro price to 45€ compared to the 40$ base price. That has nothing to with exchange rates, that's just Kalypso making things more expensive ....

but since neither store nor publisher are interested in discussing the issue, the only thing you can do is nagging their support from time to time about it. Maybe at some point some manager will have the epiphany that fair prices would be good thing ...

immi101: but given that GOG's response is merely: "it's complicated"
If you are talking about the "6 community members" thread, GOG's response wasn't merely "it's complicated". GOG's response was a complicated detailed answer that we cannot disclose. Our phrase for that was "it's complicated".
If GOG has posted that response somewhere, I do apologize, and would love a link.

it's the only response that they would allow you to communicate though, if I understood you correctly.
which is all that matters really.

Which is not the same as that being GOG's answer. But no worries.
Looks like some production costs have gone slightly up:

Cavalary: Seems like a case of them trying to get close to the same price but in various currencies and rounding to certain numbers, with the exception of China. But yeah, expecting 2 or 3 to change, maybe.
avatar
HypersomniacLive: I was referring to the prices for RU, regAR, and BR - paying more than the base price instead of getting their usual generous discounts? Must be a mistake.
Dunno about AR and BR, bus as far as RU goes, this is the correct regional price. Yeah, I don't even either. I keep saying devs should charge RU the US price or close to it for certain types of games to maximize profits, but this is not one of those games.

it might as well be, because effectively that's all on information that we will get out of GOG (seemingly). Whether that is by them directly stating that answer or indirectly by them disallowing any further flow of information doesn't really change the core of the issue.

As nice as it is that they took the time to explains things to you, it doesn't help the rest of us at all.

No kidding. (Hm, didn't go through any more of that thread today. Not that there'd be anything relevant on this issue I see.)
Not that it'd particularly matter from where I'm standing. Intolerable to go back on either of the two clear, specific core principles even if the alternative would have really been closing up shop, so explanations can't change that in any way. Though there is also the fact that GOG was initially about old games and they defined that as at least 3 years old, and it frankly seemed too little to me and would have gone to 5, and still would if needed to define the term, so what they did to allow newer games on here and what terms those run under until they reach that age may be a different bowl of fish. But for that to be all right, there'd need to be a hard line in the sand, firm rule that any and all games added after they're at least X (3-5) years old and any and all games that reach X years old after having been added sooner must not go against those original principles, and publishers can't pull games added sooner once they reach that age due to the change of terms.

immi101: hmm, I'm not following that many inDev titles, but isn't this kind of normal ? price goes up as game gets more contents
You're probably right. In fact I seem to remember other In Dev games whose price went up, but I'd swear the price hike took place when they were released, not before.

I guess it was MaGog detecting price hikes for two In Dev games in a row what grabbed my attention, but honestly there's not much else she can detect nowadays (with most of the "pricing news" coming from new releases an such).
