Vertical Shmups like Raiden work particularly well using tate (short for rotate) mode.

Mini Metro works fine in vertical mode and it actually changes the dynamics of some of the maps a lot.

It's actually a Japanese word, pronounced along the lines of TAH-té and it means vertical.

Its resemblance to the end of the word rotate is coincidental but fortuitous because you can pronounce it either way and still sort of make sense.
