50 games for the free OS available right NOW!

A while ago, we've announced our plans to add Linux support as one of the features of our digital platform, with 100 games on the launch day sometime this fall. We've put much time and effort into this project and now we've found ourselves with over 50 titles, classic and new, prepared for distribution, site infrastructure ready, support team trained and standing by, and absolutely no reason to wait until October or November. We're still aiming to have at least 100 Linux games in the coming months, but we've decided not to delay the launch just for the sake of having a nice-looking number to show off to the press. It's not about them, after all, it's about you. So, one of the most popular site feature requests on our community wishlist is granted today: Linux support has officially arrived on GOG.com!

The first 50+ titles we've have in store for you come from all the corners of our DRM-Free catalog. Note that we've got many classic titles coming officially to Linux for the very first time, thanks to the custom builds prepared by our dedicated team of penguin tamers. That's over twenty fan-favorite GOG.com classics, like &Flatout 2, , <a href="http://www.gog.com/game/darklands">Darklands, or Realms of the Haunting we've personally ushered one by one into the welcoming embrace of Linux gamers. That's already quite a nice chunk of our back-catalog, and you can expect more from our dedicated Linux team soon!

Now, for the recent titles. We've got some indie games with native Linux versions that finally find their well-deserved spot in our store. Among them, debuting on Linux, - a well received original comedic Sci-Fi puzzler. On top of that, be on the lookout for two new additions to the GOG.com catalog: Gods Will Be Watching (coming in a couple of hours) and Unrest:Special Edition (Linux build coming right up!), both of them very fresh and intriguing. This is the very first time we can provide you with all the PC versions of a premiere game, and we will continue to do so in the future. If there's a Linux version of a title we're releasing, our aim is to deliver it to you Day-1. But enough about us, let's talk about the games. Here's what you can be playing on Linux today:

Anomaly Warzone Earth

Head out to the promo page and find out which of them you can get up to 75% off until Tuesday, 9:59AM GMT. Of course, all of the games from the list above that you already own will be updated with Linux versions with no additional cost for you, just as you might have expected from GOG.com.

"OK, but how will Linux support actually work on GOG.com" - you might ask. For both native Linux versions, as well as special builds prepared by our team, GOG.com will provide distro-independent tar.gz archives and support convenient DEB installers for the two most popular Linux distributions: Ubuntu and Mint, in their current and future LTS editions. Helpful and responsive customer support has always been an important part of the GOG.com gaming experience. We wouldn't have it any other way when it comes to Linux, and starting today our helpdesk offers support for our official Linux releases on Ubuntu and Mint systems.

Diversity and freedom of choice have always been an important part of the GOG.com way. We're very glad that we could improve our service with the addition of the free (and DRM-Free) alternative to the commercial operating systems. Talking with gamers is just as important, so we're counting on your feedback! If you've got any questions, suggestions, or run into any trouble, just tell us in the forum thread below this post. Just please be gentle, this is our very first time with Linux. Happy launch day, everyone!

ASHLIIN: Why is linux good? It looks exactly the same as windows just way less games supports it.
Surely you jest.

Tell me the attached image is anything like Windows.

Linux is about freedom. Not Gratis, but Libre. You have choice, control, power, and the ability to make of it exactly as you will. If I feel like using one desktop today and then another tomorrow, I can do that without having to painfully reconfigure anything. If I decide I don't even want a desktop, I can very well do that too.

Linux is good because it gives the user a chance to be a powerful magician. Or just like me, a commonfolk who was tired of the cathedral, and so went to the bazaar.

I discovered Linux, by a temporary need, only possible with Linux, a chance!
I stayed on Linux, to save time.
Fast, Stable, Virus Free, Unnecessary Defragmentation, Freedom on Updates, Easy to Use.
There are still many other reasons... many...

But let’s talk games, they are not threatened by OS Linux Update.
Microsoft Update can be mandatory regressions, which makes the older games incompatible.
_Yes a well developed games will not necessarily be ported to Linux.
_A Linux native games, will be a good quality game, light, fast, it is a good for Windows too.
_A badly done game (Proprietary API) will not work on Linux and will be an accumulation of bug fixes on Windows.

To answer your question :
I prefer to have an OS that works properly, and have fewer games.
I prefer the quality!
We cannot understand how good it is without having tasted it.

The article is dated 2014. I have seen numerous suggestions on gog wishlist to make GOG Galaxy Linux compatible. Now, I thought, in year 2k20 I would be finally able to buy a game from GOG on Linux. 6 years have passed without any progress on the issue. It's sad, really

Is somebody stopping you?

BTW, it has always baffled me, why 2k20 instead of 2020?

The sad truth is that they are getting rich and fat on Windows alone so they don't see an incentive to offer a Linux version. It's not for a lack of funds but rather a lack of vision on their part. But, who knows, maybe they will get their act together once Galaxy 2.0 for Windows goes stable? One can hope, at least. Along with a Linux version of their Galaxy client, their website is also in need of a major overhaul...

You can. You realise the games are DRM-free, right? I've installed Linux versions of games on Linux. How did I do it without Galaxy!?
I guess they still hope to sell GOG to MicroSoft. Maybe that was what the negotiations with MS were some years ago but they could not agree upon price or some such then.

A good thing single player works fine without Galaxy. Even better, some multi-player also do not demand Galaxy.

Are we sure about this, they really wanted to sell ?

Not sure at all but pure wild speculations on my part as I have no inside information. If I had, I would probably be obligated to keep my mouth shut.

When will GOG get around to updating the Linux version of the X3:Terran War pack? Do we need to ask Egosoft to remind you AGAIN?
I just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss an important information between GOG and M$, thank you,

This is really sad. I really wanted to spend fortune on winter sale, but i will not. I wanted these old great games to play on upcoming hendheld Steam deck. And definitely I would prefare to buy games here on gog, but without knowing if I will be able to play it without need of installing windows there I will just to buy it on steam and spend more money there. Please just announc some gog client for linux that can be installed on Steam deck Proton system.

You are wasting your time mate. At best, Linux versions of games, which I always grab when I buy here, are a purely secondary consideration and a very minor revenue stream for GOG.

And many here would argue, that GOG don't even do what most would consider more important things.

So anyone who likes or loves Linux, just have to accept the nibbles we occasionally get here. It's better than nothing I guess, and how you have to see it with GOG.

I can't really disagree with Orkhepaj in this instance, but LOL he does rather like to sink the boot into Linux every chance he gets.

It's as it's said:
"People don't throw rocks at empty trees."
:P

On a serious note, though, It's not really because Linux is bad for gaming, in my rookie linux experience and humble opinion, it's just that companies focus their resources in producing games for Windows mostly, beacuse... reasons that are vast and we already discussed them before everywhere.

The way Linux was built makes it perfect for gaming performance.
If companies started redirecting their resources for Linux gaming, things would change drastically in the market.

Steam Deck using Linux is a good example of market paradigm being hit. Probably, many people that never knew about Linux existance started searching about it and even installing it in their PCs to understand why a company like Valve would use it.

Claps for Steam and Valve for Proton and Steam Deck usage. Even if I hate their drm, Im honest in acknowledging what they're doing for Linux gaming. Our hope is that more companies start making games with native Linux support and the FOSS mentality spread.

If you want to use the steam deck, and have a client, just use steam? I want to bang this nail in with a wrench, why is the wrench not shaped like a hammer!
