Considering GOG just got updated with achievements and time tracking and a client, I no longer see the need to buy this game on steam, so GOG it is for me.
I just ordered on steam for 2 reasons.

It was cheaper (how this is the case when GOG is the same company I dont know)

I guess GOG will allow steam key on GOG to get free backup copy, so I get GOG version anyway.

actually the said they have no plans to allow that for the witcher 3 like they did Witcher 1 and 2. It may change but I am not holding my breath.

In TW3 case they said that we shouldn't be so sure that they'll allow a backup copy on GOG. And for me GOG was cheaper anyway... + bonus goodies. + supporting the developers directly...

drezdar: Debate over the evility of Steam aside, are both versions identical in terms of content?
yes they are the exact same thing complete with the ability to auto update, get achivements, ect. well pending your using Galaxy's features for that stuff of course.

They've said they have no plans 'for now'.

Which makes perfect sense since if they did they'd be pushing sales to Steam because if they'd admit to doing it now people would just buy on Steam and know they'd get the GOG version anyway.

Also I will explain why I didnt buy retail (the cheapest of the lot)

The preorder retail copies are not DRM free, you need to download something to be able to launch the game, to get a physical game that needs nothing of the internet. You have to wait until you can buy a post release manufactured disc.

But retail copies do still give you a GOG key as well.
I bought on Steam then watched A) Jim Sterlings video on losing content forever then B) Gamespot's video about video game restoration and when reading the comments... Steam's current trend really are micking those of the video game crash in 1984... So i got a refund and poured money in GOG instead :P
My brain is saying I already have all the Witcher games and achievements on Steam, so do I really want to jump over to GOG. The differences I see are

Pre-order Steam extras - Game Soundtrack (MP3), Unique The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt artworks, Premium wallpapers, Digital map (PDF), Digital The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Artbook (PDF)

GOG offers the same plus 6 paper toys (no clue what that is), 16 Avatars (not sure if they are in game?), paper toy catalog and 5 HD videos... Am I missing anything? I'm not sure about the Artbook either. GOG refers to it as a comic (reason of state - Part 1)

Saw an unboxing of the collectors addition. Awesome. Sold out everywhere and I'm not buying the game twice no matter how much I love it

GoldenMonkey: I wanted to get this on GOG, but GOG charges me more since it is in USD. I can pay in local currency(Yen) on Steam, so Steam it is.
GOG's regional pricing is quite a put off for me, especially when I can buy a GOG version cheaper than on GOG's own website!

The avatars can be used for your GOG avatar. Well actually, they are just really nice square images that you can use for any account avatar you may want them for!

Don't forget, if you haven't already, you can back your Witcher 1 and 2 games up on GOG!

Just get the CD keys from steam and you get a DRM free copy here!

Thanks for the info and the link!

I now see a ton of stuff for both of those games under Game Goodies that I had no clue if they are even able to get on the Steam Client. I see the perks now of buying a game from a vendor that has direct connections to the Witcher series.

Well thats sony been idiots for not having a better deal for consumers.

Steam recently told everyone that once someone pays for a game, even if the publisher pulls it from the store, it will always be available to download, this was evidenced by the fact a skyrim modder tried to pull his mod and then got angry when steam refused to stop allowing customers who had paid for it to continue downloading it.

Regardless it is a genuine risk for digital gaming, what will be a telltale sign is what happens to xbox 360 and ps3 digital games in say 10 years time, will they still be downloadable and playable?
