I was just talking to the guy who replied to me in an unfriendly way.
Maxvorstadt may have been half joking, but he made the point that I was going to: if you make a joke in a public forum, everyone who reads it can be considered your audience. When you then say something like this:
Well, they also need a clever audience who can get their jokes.
...you are -- intentionally or not -- insulting the intelligence of all those other people, as well as whomever you may have been directly replying to. Perhaps you honestly didn't consider that, but that's how it came across.

You seem to have missed what Mechmouse implied with his reply about comedians.
Mine was just a kind of "comeback" for him.

mechmouse: Jokes, the really good ones twist truth. There is a reason most comedians are extremely clever.

I was going to point out that some Countries whose governments use their national identity to suppress aspects of peoples lives, such as the communist party in China, tend to have a lot more public holidays as a form of propaganda and social control.
