Indeed, they're more like guidelines.

GOG guides us along the DRM-free path, but it's our choice whether or not to follow. And cods swim, cogs creak, hogs squeal, and bogs smell?

I, sadly, no longer use rules.

And Steam shall have no dominion, here, in these fabled DRM-free lands.

...but then the Steamites came, and due to their ferocious barbarity, thirst for conquest and sheer numbers the DRM-free court was overthrown, the wise Lord Theodore killed, his GOGBear sons left for dead and the DRM-free games banned underground, when they nurtured their hate for the people above and started practicing Death Magic, becoming Dark DRM-free games.
They swore to purge the world from their corrupt brothers who accepted compromise, and thus ended the Age of Wonders.

GoG rules indeed. After ten years of being a supporter of Steam, I have finally switched to GoG more or less completely. The reasons listed below makes GoG the superior alternative.

1. Forced achievements.
As a completionist, this makes the games less enjoyable for me. There are too many games with achievements that "forces" the user to play a certain way if they want to complete the game 100%. Achievements put som nasty incentive on how to play the game, it's hard not to have some gnawing feeling on how the game "should" be played to complete it. Instead of enjoying the gameplay, I'm just crossing off some boring to-do-list.

2. DRM that cripples (or breaks) the game.
Many older games stop working because of online activations and other DRM. It's not that fun to pay money for games that doesn't work because of a nasty mixture of lost dev support and DRM. In these cases, the dev/publisher loses interest and the game stops working. They don't even care enough to patch away the restrictions, they just abandon the product. I'm looking at you, Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition.

3. Nasty community.
This part can be ignored for some, but the Steam community is much more childish and trollish.

GoG is one of the last modern resorts that lets you play your games on your terms.

3rd RULE: Well, ok, you can talk about GOG, up to you really.

In the end no matter what I pretend, GOG is more important than the end or the start. And what it meant to me would eventually be DRM Free in a time I tried so hard.
