Some stuff(iirc) is uploaded by random people and you'd need to check with someone with the site to make sure it's legal for them to host/you to get a copy. And yah some stuff got taken down before due to the uploaders not having permission to do so.

I guess you can't be held liable if you DL something they host that they don't have permission, but I myself would err on the side of caution with such cases.

Freelancer is NOT free as well, it is in IP rights hell, part of it belong to Microsoft, part may or may not belong to Chris Roberts & Phil Wattenbarger. And even if the whole game was owned by Microsoft we might never see it here because Microsoft is not interested in GOG that much.

There are numerous internet sites with all kind of games, even the ones which are selling commercially, it doesn't mean it's legal to download them for free, certainly not. In some countries you may even get in trouble, please consult with your local lawyer if you don't believe me.

This is all true, but I doubt a game dev is going to have one arrested if they download some game or other....at most they will send a letter to your ISP to warn you about it.

Not the developer but the acting publisher (or current IP rights holder) may fine a person or even put a person into jail. This is highly unlikely because it's too much trouble. Probably the publisher will ask politely the website to delist a game. Letter to ISP could mean that user is in danger already. And if we apply a good portion of paranoia we may assume that Windows 10 spying tools plus Skype conversation about playing Freelancer for free could lead to some difficulties for the player.

As for the pirating I'm also not promoting it but... occasionally there is just no other way to play Nocturne or some other gems. All I know is that I am to buy all those games if they become digitally available for legal ownership.

C&C Dawn, Tiberian and Red Alert have been Freeware for years, but you can certainly buy them if you want. They went Freeware as part of an anniversary celebration by memory.

...as for Freelancer, yeah I mentioned the IP issue in a post after that as well as the whole discussion on abandonware being a topic for a different thread, a topic that has been ongoing for decades. Short version though - Freelancer is Freeware in all but name.

Yes, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn (C&C 1) and Command & Conquer: Red Alert were made available for free download to public by EA the same way the floppy versions of The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall by Bethesda (Zenimax). But C&C and TES games are not freeware still. But I totally agree with your point.

1. I dunno how Russia handles it but over here they don't jail people for DLing a copy or two of pirated games/etc. Maybe people who HOST such for DL, maybe, but not DLers.

2. I agree with the last bit especially for games that are impossible(literally) to get anywhere else. I have a legal copy of a game called symbiocom that is very rare but I have no drive on my one pc to use it so I had to dl a copy of it from online to play on that pc.

Too right! In Germany the law is, if the site is reputable, you can trust the downloads to be legal.
