I used the GOG Downloader since I was registered here in 2009 until they finally dropped it. Since I never was a big fan of browser downloads myself and GOG clearly said they won't bring the Downloader back since it is "obsolete" I now use Galaxy to download my files so I know both tools pretty well and I can exactly tell you what the GOG Downloader does better - not even subjective but objective since I am talking about features Galaxy does not even have when it comes to downloading your installers.
1) GOG Downloader: Whenever you get an update for the offline installers you will get an update notification only on the web site. So all you had to do with the GOG Downloader is to launch it (which was faster than Galaxy will ever be since it was JUST a Downloader and nothing more) and let it run in the background. Now you simply went to all your updated games in your library on the web site and clicked ONE TIME to get the game queued in the GOG Downloader. When you started the queue in the end Downlaoder also tested if the version you want to download already existed in your folder to prevent unnecessary downloads.
2) GOG Galaxy: You still receive the update flags only on the web site and so after starting Galaxy (which takes longer) you will first have to find the updated games in the Galaxy library (a step not necessary when you have a direct link to the web site as the GOG Downloader had) there switch to the Extras register (additional klick) and then queue the game (same as in GOG Downloader). GOG Galaxy is only testing if there is a download in the Download folder that has been startet and should be resumed - it is NOT checking if the version yoou want to download is already in the directory ... if it is it will still download the installer again without even noticing you that the file is already there. It ends up with the stupid "!Temp" directory in the subfolder (which you would have to delete manually) since obviously Galaxy devs don't understand that you usually delete Temp files automatically when you don't need them anymore ... but that's just a small annoyance and not that important than the rest I mentioned.
So I am wondering what Galaxy (and I am only talking about archiving offline installers) can do that GOG Downloader could not do - since this is the only way how Galaxy would be "better" than the GOG Downloader .... although we still have the Galaxy disadvantages I mentioned before.
