My favourite anime by Lina Inverse.
You would think my favourite anime is about me, Lina Inverse, but no my favourite anime is another show from the early 90's, Ranma ½.
The show does not boast deep philosophical themes. It is fun, lightweight entertainment.
The allure, and the reason it is my favourite anime, is it's roster of colorful characters and especially the interactions between each. To summerize the show: it's about love triangles.
The backdrop of the anime is 80-90's Japan. The lack of modern instantaneous communication devices, like mobile phones, gives the show an even more intimate and innocent atmosphere.
The backdrop is really irrelevant, the characters would not be out of place in any time period, and the theme -- love -- is immortal anyway.
The real highlight are the characters. So about them, and the shows uniqueness: In china are cursed springs, where, if you fall into them, you turn into... a goose, a piglet, a cat or whatever/whoever drowned in said spring. Not permenantly though. Upon contact with hot water you turn into yourself. Upon contact with cold water you turn into the cursed version.
Our main character, and the titular of the show, Ranma, is a 16-year old boy who is cursed with turning into... a girl... may I remind you that the theme of the show is love triangles. =)
Male Ranmas female friends become female Ranmas enemies and vice versa and so forth.

2 more reasons I would classify this as my favourite anime is due to it having the strangest translation I had ever seen and having the sweetest interaction I had ever seen.
The sweetest: A black magic user voodoo curses a girl ''To go on a date tomorrow.'' Only to realize that ''tomorrow'' means: every day from now on will be ''tomorrow''.
After spending an entire episode fighting the main character to correct his mistake and put another curse on, he actually succeeds! And wishes for... ''Please don't be angry at me.''
With said girl freezing, turning around to say ''But... I was never angry at you to begin with...''
---
The translation: A giant talking cat wants to confess his love to a crossdresser (whom he thinks is a girl) and spends half of a movie (yes, movie, not episode) chasing him. At the end of the film he finally does, only for the crossdresser to rip his skirt and proclaim: ''I am a boy!!!''
Cats reaction?
Audio: ''Something, something, Japanese, Japanese, 4 more words and a sermon.''
Translation: ''Nobody's perfect.''
To this day I ask what the literal translation of that was.
