1996 – A path through a wood to the north-east of Jacmel, Haiti.
Kanaval day is done. When most people headed south to take off their costumes and cool off in the sea, we slipped away, heading north out of the city. We journeyed individually, each of us walked for hours while the sun set, and entered the woods in darkness.
We knew where to meet - two paths crossed beneath an opening in the branches. There rum was sprayed and lit, and someone sang a song calling to Papa Legba, and the Lwa. The pwen was begun.
In the bursts of fire the kanaval masks of the attendants flashed. An enormous winged Zel Maturin - the black devil who revives the other devils who are defeated in the war against heaven;
a Lasetkòd, smothered in charcoal, kleren and cane syrup, horned and grimacing and holding aloft a long braided whip;
Ezili Dantò, depicted with a beautiful dark-eyed mask and black dress entwined with ribbons of all colours;
Yahweh, the ox of Gran Bwa, with his enormous, branching horns, covered in a cloak of oxhide;
tall Papa Jwif, a tiny eyes and nose poking out from a bush of eyebrows, whiskers, moustache sprouting out in all directions. His beard trails to the floor and his mitre sticks up into the air almost as far the other direction;
Madame Brigitte, her mask a skull, and sporting an elegant black hat decorated with dead flowers;
A Mo de Mer, white faced, staring, a knotted rope around its neck, draped in tatters and jeweled with conch shells;
A Bouzin Red, the whore, masked with the look of death and clad in a flashy red dress;
A Zonbi, a flat, smiling moustached mask with a cigarette protruding from it, cloaked in a white sheet and draped in chains shackled to the wrists and neck;
A Baka, this one a tiger, with snarling red mouth and sharp white teeth, its muscular body painted in yellow and brown spots;
Madame Lasiren, jewels shining at her throat and wrists, her mask not-quite-human, long gloves hide her fish's fins and her dress sweeps the floor to cover her fish's tail, she clutches in her arms the baby Marie Rose;
Papa Gede, sprightly in a black velvet hat and rich purple smoking jacket - one lens of his huge black reflective sunglasses is broken, revealing a cheeky, darting eye. His fine, serious clothes fail to hide his enormous erection, but he doesn't seem to care;
Chaloska stands with military presence - black sunglasses perched atop enormous lips and teeth, all framed neatly by a swooping Napoleon hat, the stripes and buttons of his uniform glitter proudly in the flickering light;
Finally, the king of the dead, Bawon Samdi himself, a black top hat atop his skull mask, decked in exquisite morning dress and carrying the chains by which he leads his zonbi procession.
As quickly as it started, the ceremony stops, we were alone in the woods, in the darkness. In the absolute silence.

The action phase ends once the deadline has been reached, and the voting phase will begin again.
3. Votes should be phrased thusly: Vote Flubbucket. If you want to stop voting for a player, it should be phrased thusly: Unvote Flubbucket. Each player may vote for any other living player. A player may vote for only one player at a time. A vote may be withdrawn by unvoting. A player who is being voted for by the majority of living players will be immediately unmasked, their role will be made public knowledge, and the game will go to the action phase. A player may also vote no-unmasking. A majority vote of no-unmasking will end the voting phase without an unmasking.
4. When you are unmasked or killed, you are out of the game - stop posting.
5. Don't edit your posts for any reason. Learn to love typing errors and ambiguous grammar!
ALSO Do not post multiple times without leaving a break of 10 minutes between posts.
6. Please bold any requests for vote counts or questions to the moderator.
7. Everything within the game should happen on this page, in messages to the moderator or in any pages specified in your role message from the moderator. Do not discuss the game outside the thread.
8. Do not quote or paraphrase too closely any PMs you receive from the mod.
9. All players should post at least once every 36 hours. If you expect to be away for more than 36 hours, please let JoeSapphire know either through PM or in the game thread.
10. All players on the winning team win! even if they are eliminated or dead.
If you can no longer participate in the game, contact JoeSapphire with word to that effect.
Players who are modkilled or replaced out will automatically lose the game.

They were here. We all knew it. We were in the presence of sa nou pa we yo - that which we don't see. Were they Lwa? Or spirits dragged up from anba dlo?
Our masks were protecting us. We knew this. No-one moved.
